The blonde haired woman suppressed another yawn; she stretched her arms over her head and twisted, causing her spine to make a noise that would have made her partner twinge. Leaning back over the keyboard, she continued typing data into her computer. A few minutes later she yawned again and felt her eyes begin to drift shut. Snapping them back open, she looked over the sequence of numbers she’d just typed. “Damn it,” she growled.
Highlighting the line of numerals, she deleted the mistake and began typing again but as she stared at the screen, the numbers began moving. Rubbing her eyes, she glanced at the screen again. For a few seconds everything was fine but then the numbers skittered across the screen again.
“Okay, that’s it. I’ve been at this way too long now,” she grumbled. Saving what she’d completed, Sam slid off the stool and shuffled towards the door, dragging her feet.
A brief elevator ride down found her walking zombie-like into the infirmary. She glanced around, not seeing her partner anywhere. One of the nurses spotted her and pointed towards the supply room. Nodding her thanks, she made her way across the floor and slipped into the room off the infirmary where she found Janet and another nurse doing an inventory of medical supplies.
Leaning against a shelf she listened as the doctor rattled off some instructions to the nurse, “I have no clue who ordered all these tongue depressors but we certainly don’t need that many. See if they need some at the Academy hospital and if not, we’ll figure out what to do with them later.”
Sam spoke up, “We could always use them on off world missions as kindling.”
Janet looked up from her clipboard. “Oh, hey, you. I thought you went home hours ago,” she said to the blonde.
“Nope, never made it out of my lab,” Sam replied as she covered her mouth to hide a yawn. “I know another use for the tongue depressors too.”
Janet raised an eyebrow. “Really, now? Do tell,” she said, handing the clipboard to the nurse and moving towards Sam.
“We can whittle them down and use them as toothpicks for those little cocktail weenies for the next time we host dignitaries or we can give them to Teal’c and he can turn them into little darts for a blow gun,” Sam said in a serious tone as she made a throwing motion with one of the aforementioned objects, but she had a crooked grin on her face which disappeared when she yawned again.
“All right, now I know you’ve been awake too long; you’re being silly,” Janet remarked as she took the tongue depressor out of Sam’s hand and taking her by the elbow, turned her towards the door. “Couch…my office…now, missy,” she ordered.
“Resistance is futile,“ mumbled Sam as she giggled and Janet pushed her towards the office. They entered the CMOs’ office and Sam shuffled over to the couch where she plopped down and held out a hand to the doctor. “Come here.”
“I can’t, Sam. I still have to finish inventory and then get ready for SG8’s physicals before they gate out this afternoon.” The doctor told her partner which earned her a pout and a pleading look from the blonde.
“Please…just until I fall asleep,” begged Sam.
Janet sighed as she took in Sam’s disheveled appearance and the dark circles under her eyes. “All right, scoot over,” Janet said, motioning for Sam to move.
Sam slid down some and let the doctor sit in the corner of the couch, when Janet was settled she lay down, placing her head in the doctor’s lap. Looking up she smiled at her partner. “Thank you. I just need to take a little nap then back to work.
Janet smiled back at her and brushed the bangs away from Sam’s eyes. “Exactly how long have you been up this time?” she asked.
Her face scrunched up in thought as Sam replied, “Umm, I lost track; at least twenty-four hours I think.”
Running her fingers through the short blonde hair, Janet sighed. “I know it’s useless to fuss at you but you really need to get regular sleep, Samantha,” the doctor said in a soft voice.
With her eyes closing from the soft caresses of her partner’s fingers, Sam just made a humming agreement sound as she slowly drifted off. Janet continued the soft stroking until the blonde’s breathing slowed and evened out as she fell into a deeper sleep.
“What am I going to do with you, sweetie? At least this time your body decided it needed sleep more than that brilliant brain of yours and it saved me from having to trick you…again,” the doctor murmured tracing a finger along the side of Sam’s face. Propping an elbow up on the couch arm, Janet rested her chin in her free hand; she’d sit here just a little while longer then go back to finishing her work.
Six hours later…..
Wiping the sleep from her eyes, Sam emerged from Janet’s office. She made her way to the infirmary’s main room and found the doctor busy administering the physicals she’d mentioned earlier. Catching her eye, she motioned towards a curtained area and the doctor nodded. When Janet finished admonishing the huge Marine about proper foot care, she made her way over to the curtain. Slipping behind it, she found Sam stretched out on the gurney.
“What?” the doctor asked as Sam motioned for her to come closer. “Did you get enough sleep?”
When Janet grew close enough for her to grab Sam did so, pulling the smaller woman onto the gurney with her. “Whoa!’ exclaimed the doctor as she landed on top of her partner. “I take it you’re all refreshed now?” Janet asked with a grin.
“Yup…what time do you go off duty?” Sam asked, running a finger over the doctor’s cheek.
“Not for a couple of hours still, why?” replied the doctor, trying to repress a giggle as Sam’s other hand skimmed across her ribs.
“Perfect…that gives me enough time to go home, shower and fix up a little surprise for you,” replied Sam with a crooked grin on her face.
Janet pushed herself away from the taller frame of her partner and slid off of the gurney. “Well then, if that’s the case, then I better hurry up and get finished with these physicals,” she told the blonde making to move out of the curtained area but not before placing a quick kiss on Sam’s lips.
Sam smacked her lips and smiled. “Mmmm….yes, hurry up.”
The doctor gave her partner an amused look and shook her head. “I think letting you sleep on the office couch is something we need to try more often; seems it has nice side effects on you.”
Placing her hands behind her head and with a smug look Sam replied, “I did sleep really well but if this is a side effect of your couch then maybe it needs to come home with us.”
Janet laughed. “If we take that couch home, then we both would never sleep if this is how you act after naps on it.”
The blonde stuck her tongue out and blew a raspberry at the doctor who shook her head again before she left to finish her work. Sam smiled…she had to get home and set some things up; there was nothing like a nap to recharge the batteries, she thought and sliding off the gurney, slipped out from behind the curtain. Walking out of the infirmary, she breezed past Janet and couldn’t help but give the doctor’s rear a little pinch.
The doctor let out an undignified squeak and whirled to see Sam waving goodbye as she moved out of the infirmary. Chuckling softly, Janet turned back to the soldier sitting on the bed, who had turned a blind eye to the antics of his superiors. It was time to finish work so she could hurry home and pay back Sam for that pinch.
