She waited with eyes closed and breath held.
There it was…light and faint, ghosting across her face.
The movement quickened and she felt her short blonde locks ruffling under its touch. With a sigh, she opened her eyes as the sensation trailed away.
Blinking at her surroundings, she pulled the helmet in her hands back on and revved the motorcycle’s engine…homeward bound; where phantom memories would replay as did the phantom touches as the night progressed.
She pulled up into the driveway of the large house, a house meant to be shared; one that had once been. “Why am I doing this all over again?” she asked herself. “I come home to an empty house every night…empty except for the memories.”
Shaking her head she muttered, “Like this is going to work. I’ve had this conversation with myself way too many times.”
A huge gust of wind tore across the driveway nearly pushing her from the motorcycle. Yanking her helmet off she stared up into the darkening sky as the gust eddied and flowed around her. Up on the mountain the wind had been light and caressing but now it was harsh and buffeting; almost as if it didn’t want her to give up and enter the house.
With a small smile she nodded and whispered, “I understand.”
Turning the ignition on, she let the bike idle as it rolled backwards down the driveway. Pausing, she pulled her helmet on and said, “Maybe I’ll see what Vala is up to tonight.”
Revving the engine, the blonde took off down the street and as the orange of her tail lights slowly grew faint there in the driveway a lazy devil of dust and leaves spun out of existence.
