Snow and Choral Matins

Apr 06, 2008 12:02

We sung our first (I believe) full choral matins today at church. It wasn't too bad, although I wish we had some more men as we are a very soprano heavy choir.

The music was;
  • Stanford Te Deum and Jubilate in B flat
  • Sanders responses (we were going to do Aylward, but it's been years since we've sung them and we need more practice)
  • O come Ye Servants of the Lord by Tye

 Not too many mistakes. I felt like I was pulling the men during the psalm and Venite. They always want to drag and it's a hard job trying the speed them up. Especially today, as our choirmaster was playing the organ and so couldn't conduct everything. We also have a couple of Sops who hang onto notes too long. Nice that they are singing, but they really must come off or they are in danger of missing the next entry.

It went well, all things considered, and I hope we have more like it. We do lots of Choral evensongs, but there are so many good setting of the morning canticles that we need to do more of those. I shall have to get working on my choirmaster.

We had publisied this, but because of the snow, I'm not sure if we had many visitors. The visiting priest this morning announced the first hymn as 'In the bleak mid winter', before announcing the correct one.

Got some photos.
