Redemption 2011 - Friday

My turn for a con report.

As seems to have become the tradition with Redemption, I was up very late getting my fancy dress entry finished. My own fault as I should have started it earlier.

Friday morning was spent packing before an early lunch with R. He was driving, so my sleepyness did not worry me. What did worry me though was the fact that I had stated that I had wanted to be in Coventry by 2pm so we could offload the car before I went to a panel at 3pm. R said, "It's fine; it'll only take an hour." It took an hour and a half, and that was with R taking the wrong turning on the ring-road twice.

The hotel was much as I remembered it last time; servicable, but slightly shabby and in desperate need of a refurbishment. The lifts were still travelling in their own altenative dimension, and the heating was a bit too high for most of the con. Plus we only had one room key. A bit awkward as R and I rarely see each other during a Con, but we worked around it.

Got to the hotel room and then to the panel, only missing a bit of the beginning. gaspodex  waved to me as I came in and I settled down to listen to everyone's opinion on what a B5 movie should be. It was a mixed discussion as everyone wanted more B5, but had differing views on what that should be. Although I didn't say so at the time, I would personally like to see the Telepath War, and I don't care about getting any of the B5 stars in it. It's the one thing I didn't like about 'In the Beginning', that they shoe-horned characters in together when it was very unlikely that they had met up at that time. For me, a good story should carry a film whether it's got big name stars in or not.

Then I ran up a couple of floors to the Primeval plots panel. It was a good discussion with a general agreement not to think too much about the science of time travel as the future seems to be changing each season. I was glad to find that I wasn't the only one that thought the old guy this season could be a future Connor.

Then it was on to the cabaret and fancy dress sign up. By now, I'm a bit of an old hand, so had my music ready on my memory stick. I was a little hazy on what the music cues should be as I hadn't had time to discuss it withvalderys , but lovely Clare helped me to devise some and gave a very good suggestion about lighting.

Then it was too the room for a bit of food and discovered that R had done all the car unpacking.

Then it was off to 'Stuff or Junk'. I had volunteered to bring my prized possesion, Jason Carter's Fourth Season Parking Permit from B5. I think everyone got outdone by the towel that John Barrowman had used on stage and cried into.

Next was 'Where is King Arthur when you need him?'. This was a mixture of discussing the various incarnations of the legends, and what would we do if Arthur really turned up in the modern world. One suggestion was that he should run for parliment, as he really wouldn't be much use as a warrior.

Opening ceremony and our first introduction to the candidates for ruler of the Universe. Great fun as usual. How long do these people prepare for? Londo got arrested by Gene Hunt, The Master regenerated and Big Brother freaked us out.

It took us a little while to find our team for the pub quiz, as most of the people had congregated at a table at the back (hence our team name). Then off went emmzzi  at breakneck speed with the questions. Once we got her to slow down a bit, it went very well with us winning. We all got to pick a toy from the winners bag (along with Greens grabbing all the Drazi points). I got a Hong Kong Phooey, and gaspodex  got back his Garfield that shouldn't have been in the bag in the fist place.

valderys  and I took the chance to sit in the bar and discuss our skit for the masquerade. As usual, she had the best ideas. Then it was time for a bit of ceilidh dancing before heading to bed.
