I'm heading to Charleston tomorrow. Not for Xmas, mind you, but for the five-day weekend.
In case you hadn't heard, former
Speaker Tom Murphy died earlier this week, and he'll be lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda tomorrow (Friday). In an unusual move, The Powers That Be have shut down the entire Capitol building for the day. While the Speaker's casket will be available to the public as usual for this sort of thing, no one else will be allowed anywhere else in the building without some sort of special pass. So our office is closed along with most, if not all, of the other legislative offices in the Capitol, giving us all an extra day off before the Xmas holiday four-day weekend (we're off Monday for, I believe, Washington's birthday - or R.E. Lee's, I can't remember which goes with Thanksgiving and which with Xmas).
The crew started taking down all the Xmas decorations today. The
ginormous tree in the Rotunda came down overnight in what must have been an arduous task. That thing was huge. In its place are the black trappings for Friday.
They even had a stand-in casket. The poinsettia tower that had been
tackily in front of the Oglethorpe bust was also gone early. I imagine the rest will be down by the time we get back next Wednesday.
So I'm off to Charleston once I've finished a couple of errands in the morning. Mom said I could bring Fizzgig this time; she'll cover the couches with sheets for the shedding. Fizz, of course, is all excited about going to Grandma's house.
Law Grad School Brother is already there. I'll bring him back here with me on Tuesday, and he'll hang around until Thursday week after that, including New Year's Eve. As I have to work the three days after Xmas, including Wed night trivia, I have no idea what he'll do. Fizzgig is also all excited about having her uncle stay with us.
