Bill Parcells is about to become the Falcons' director of football operations and have the job of hiring a new GM (which means current GM/President Rich McKay is out) and a new head coach.
As interesting as that is, what I find most interesting is that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution did not break the story. You would think the Falcons' hometown paper would know what was going on in the organization, but it was in fact scooped on this story not once, but twice by two different out of town sources.
The lede in today's article pretty much gives it away:
Bill Parcells is on the verge of accepting Arthur Blank's offer to take over all football operations for the Atlanta Falcons, the New York Daily News reported on Wednesday. (emphasis mine)
The story, however, according to Sports Illustrated, was originally reported by
ESPN.com by Chris Mortensen, who I think is based in Atlanta.
I'm willing to cut the AJC some slack on this one since Parcells currently works for ESPN as an analyst, but why is the AJC quoting a New York City newspaper about an Atlanta story?
Why wasn't the AJC all over this? It's not as though it's a shock the Falcons are looking for a head coach. Shouldn't the AJC beat writers have someone in the team's front office that leaks them this kind of information? The Daily News sure does.
It's just another example of the sharp decline of the Atlanta daily, the flagship of Cox Communications.
AJC - WTF?
