Raven falls asleep at night dreaming of Charles and Erik and Hank and Darwin and Alex and Sean and Moira.
She wakes up in a too-hot room. Her bed is too firm and she can’t remember where the bathroom is.
When she turns to her other side, Angel’s in the other twin bed, hair mussed and wings wrapped tight across her shoulders.
Raven says, did you miss us?
The room is too quiet; Raven hears something break down the hall and flinches.
Angel says, yes.

When Angel left, Azazel dropped them in the submarine in a cloud of red smoke and she choked on her tears.
She stutters, slowly, painfully through - Why did you kill him?
And Shaw says, Emma, calm her down with the flick of his wrist. His face is annoyed, no sympathy, and something curls in the pit of Angel’s stomach.
He hands her a pair of leather shorts and walks out of the room and Angel thinks, oh god what I have done. Riptide smiles at her; she misses Sean.
Emma crawls into her mind and Angel would never know if it wasn’t for the wash of calm that breaks over her entire being. She fights it, thinks of Darwin dying and the look on Sean’s face and how badly this will fuck Alex up. She loses, eventually.
Being underwater isn’t good for her, it makes her wings itch and she misses the sun and the feeling of soaring high and fast through the sky.
She puts on the shorts and drinks with Shaw and hates herself, mostly.

Raven never had friends growing up. She had Charles, who was all she needed.
She doesn’t have Charles anymore, lost Hank, and when Angel turns to her and says, “I’m sorry,” Raven is too tired to do anything but mutter, okay.
Angel slips her hand into Raven’s and squeezes once, wants to ask How’s Sean? How’s Alex? How are you? She doesn’t. Raven has a dead kind of look in her eyes, stunned, so Angel pulls her towards the house and says, “I’ll show you to our room.”
Azazel and Riptide are far ahead already; Erik stays where he is behind them, hands curled into fists.

Back at the facility, Raven and her shared a room. They laughed about boys and did each other’ makeup and it was normal, kind of.

What’s it like to fly? Raven asked her once. It was the middle of the night, and Raven was too caught up in the idea of Hank to sleep. She could hear the guards outside and it made her a little nauseous.
Angel made this noise in the back of her throat, something in between a moan and a sigh, something that get caught. She says, it’s the most incredible thing I’ve ever done.
Raven gets chills.
Including sex, Angel elaborates and they both break into giggles. She says, don’t tell Sean I told you that.
Raven whispers, I’ve never had sex, I wouldn’t know. She can see Angel’s teeth from her bed, glinting.
Angel asks, do you want to?
Raven’s breath catches in her throat and she stutters, With Hank, maybe.
Her legs are caught in the sheets and she twists them to get out.
Angel kisses her slowly; Raven wasn’t expecting it. She slips a hand into Angel’s hair and pulls her closer. Angel’s tongue runs over Raven’s teeth and she lets a sigh slip into her mouth.
There’s a knock on the door - Sean laughs, Angel c’mon. I have something to show you.
Angel’s hand is flat on the small of Raven’s back and she winks once, says, “That’ll give you something to look forward to,” and flies out of the room.

Raven wakes up knowing where she is, legs tangled into Angel’s and breathing steady. She’s gotten used to the weather and starts sleeping naked.
She says, did you ever stop missing us?
Angel, voice cracking, says no.
The whirring of her wings lulls Raven to sleep.
