My in-laws live about 18 miles outside of Portland, at the top of a hill. We are talking small winding rural road, out in the middle of nowhere. When I lived there a dozen years ago, I always felt tremendously trapped by the location. I owned a bicycle, but could not conceive of actually being able to ride my bicycle to or from there.
Today I biked there. I've now expanded the range of places that I can get to under my own power.
The ride was a distance of 25 miles, which in the scheme of things is not all that much. The part that has left me ecstatic is that the last part of the ride was 3 miles with a 1400 foot climb. I've defeated a climb that has owned me for a decade :)
The bike performed well. My lights were okay, though I need to replace my headlight battery. My legs are going to be a bit sore tomorrow.
