In the name of misery

Anti-smoking ads areby far the worst conceived and delivered adverisements. They rely on sad stories and falsh predictins to hock their ideal that smoking is inherantly bad for you. Isn't it fairly obvious that it already is? People don't smoke because they have been tricked into it; they do it because they want to. If smokers really did not want to smoke then no one would because it's impossible not to know that they are unhealthy.

Subtlety is the key. Only anti-smoking ads can get away with having nothing but pure rhetoric and made up statistics to get their way. Case in point: one ad says that the odds of dying while having a toaster next to the bathtub is somewhere around 1 in 140, 000; while the ods of his dying from smoking is 1 in 2. How does that make sense or ring true? Doesn't everyone have a chance of dying? Don't smoke and never die! That's what this advertisement suggests, how innaccurate. Stupid.ca is the worst provider of these annoying ads, mainly because of their whole angle on the situation. Their argument is particularly weak when their commercial centers around a woman rubbing herself in dog shit because kids who smoke smell like "crap".
Truth.com was a different story. Their premise was just to provide actual(though doctored) records of tabacco industry to give them a bad name. They also provdided full ingredient lists and so forth.
More government of Canada blundering campaigns include the whole idea not to smoke if you have children because your smoke will indefinately kill them. My father was a heavy smoker for years after I was born which means years more for my brothers and they went on to become some of the best hockey players in Ottawa. All of them were consecutively MVP's and nearly single handedly brought victory to the Glebe Hockey team. Where I have run marathons over and over and never collapsed due to a blackened lung. This comes from people who allegedly inhaled over 200,000 ciggarettes of smoke.

Smoking is not a guarenteed death as those annoying ads woudl lead you to believe. Just because you light of a smoke doesn't mean you will miss your kid's graduation, or live to see them grow up. Death comes regardless and when it arrives is not always up to you. If you start smoking, you enter into a risk factor in which the odds of you living to 90 diminish, but don't dissapear. It's not a 1 in 2 chance of dying. Even if that statistic is right, then it's just that you have a 1 in 2 chance of not making it to 90 years old. boo hoo.

The fact of the matter is that, yes, smoking is bad for your health and the health of those around you. But wake up liberals! The tobacco companies are not a group of gray haired men gathered around a table saying "Gentlemen, how shall we commit evil today?"
