007 • [the cafe] but darling understand, that everything ends.

Being alone wasn't something she was entirely new to. Of course, she talked to several people in the city, but talking and companionship were a little different. John had disappeared, which was typical of him, and she tried to ignore how hard it was to let him go again. Then of course James and Jimmy had left many months prior. The only person left ( Read more... )

Things had sort of been looking up for Bones. Sure, he was still stuck in the city allegedly run by gods who he still had yet to actually meet, sure he was at least a couple hundred years off in terms of technology and information then most of the other hostages, but the weird shape shifting thing had apparently cleared itself up (which he definitely wasn't complaining about) and Jim Kirk was here. And while sure, that wasn't really a good thing in that it meant somewhere there was an Enterprise probably missing its Captain and CMO now, but selfishly? McCoy was really happy he was here. And besides, if anyone was going to find a way to get them out of here, he was confident it would be Jim.

So, when he headed into the cafe to grab some coffee before his shift at the hospital started, he looked much less irritable then usual, which was kind of a big deal since he pretty much always looked at least annoyed with something. And so when he saw a familiar face sitting by herself, figuring heck why not, he walked over and gestured to the chair next to her.

"This seat taken?"

Which was sort of a 'hi, good to see you, how are you' all rolled into one.

Helen pulled her attention from the window up to Bones. A smile spread on her face before she nodded for him to sit down. Of course it wasn't taken. It was hardly as if she was expecting company.

"Not at all, please," she said. "How have you been?"

"Not bad," he said honestly, taking the seat. "And yourself?"

It wasn't like he was going to elaborate on everything that had been going well for him without asking how she'd been first. He was, after all, a gentleman.

"I have been much better." Helen admitted and taped the edges of her cold cup of tea. She glanced up at him.

"Have things been well for you and Captain Kirk?"

Her less then enthusiastic answer got an eyebrow raise from the doctor, which only rose higher when she mentioned his newly arrived best friend. That was fast.

"I guess you've met Jim." He considered how best to put it. "Things have been good. It's been nice to have him around. Don't tell him I said that," he added rapidly before turning the conversation back to her.

"So, what's been bothering you?"

"Straight to the point then, I see." Helen couldn't help but smile. At least he was worried enough to ask. Many didn't. "Since I have arrived, there have been many from home that have come to the city... and most of them have left. All that I have now is my daughter, Ashley, and we haven't spoken in months. Though, I'm not one to complain out loud about my situation."

She looked up at him, her hands going around the cup entirely. "He is certainly a charmer."

"I'm sorry." He didn't really have a lot to add on the distant daughter front. It wasn't like he was in any position to give advice in that department. Still, he couldn't help but feel sorry for her. Considering how lonely he'd been before Jim had shown up, he couldn't really imagine what it would be like for him to just... disappear one day.

But, not wanting to force her to keep talking about the issue if she didn't want to, this time he accepted the change in topic without protest.

"I suppose," he sighed, not able to contain a slight eye roll as he envisioned what Jim might have done. "I hope he didn't embarrass himself or anything."

She laughed slightly. "Oh, I doubt he could embarrass himself. I think I'll keep the bombshell of news for the appropriate time." Helen smiled at the idea of picturing the young captain's face when he learned her age.

That got a snicker from Bones, who took a sip of his coffee before continuing. "Might not be a bad idea."

A slight pause, and then he voiced a thought that had occured to him earlier that week. "You got any plans for the holidays? I'm not exactly sure what people do for 'em when they're stuck in some magical floating city." From the way he said it, it was pretty clear that the good doctor was still not really sure what to make of his situation.

Her head tilted slightly to the side at the question. She hadn't thought much about it. There had been little talk - as far a she was aware - of what the city did. She imagined there would be a party of some sort, and perhaps decorations everywhere. Not that any were present at the moment.

"I don't, actually. Which is rather odd... usually I do."

Bones nodded. "Guess bein' stuck here really does change everythin'."

Not that he was surprised or anything. Obviously being in space changed things as well, but somehow, this seemed different. At least on the Enterprise there were hundreds of coworkers to celebrate with, not that Bones really got that into the holiday season.

"I suppose I could whip something up in the short time we have left." Helen smiled. "Is there anything in particular you normally do, Dr. McCoy?"
