New Used Car

Dec 03, 2010 22:49

So, quick recap: Transmission is rapidly dying on my car. Not worth fixing. Car is basically junk now. Just put $500 worth of tires on it. Have been borrowing Mom and Dad's second car all week.

This is the development: Mom and Dad have found a car that's very similar to their second car. They're going to sell me their second car, and buy the new similar car for their new second car. I'm fine with this. Their second car is a 2007 Chevy Impala, and I've grown to like it over the past few days. I know it's been well-maintained. And the three of us now realize that the heavy mileage "just for now" approach that got me the Taurus was poorly considered, and that bullets should be bitten and I should get a newer, less well-traveled car that will last a few years. So that's that.

I'm getting up early tomorrow, first to shovel all the fluffy white stuff that fell this afternoon, then to drive down to Owatonna and get the title switched to my name. The government center closes at 12:00 on Saturdays, so I need to get down there pretty quick in the AM.

As for the $500 worth of tires... I don't know. Dad's suggestion of getting a tire place to swap them out for crappy used tires, then reselling the new tires on eBay, seems less crazy than it did a few days ago. Maybe I can make a few calls in the morning. I don't have the resources to remove four tires on my own, nor do I have any place where a tireless car can sit. We're going to take a hit on these tires no matter what, but I just want to minimize the damage as much as possible.

No idea what the insurance switchover will be like. Ugh. I hope it goes down a bit.

Considering the whole car death situation, I've been pretty okay this week. Don't know why. Maybe it's just because I enjoy driving the Impala a lot more than I enjoyed driving the Taurus.
