Well, this must be a new record. Idle at work in just 18 minutes. *sigh* What to do with myself for the remaining 7 hours and 42 minutes? (OK, yeah, there will most likely be work later. But for the time being, I'm glad I brought my Sudoku book!)
Spent over $300 having the plumbing to the downstairs toilet redone to try to get rid of the sewer gas smell in the basement . . . only to finally (after the better part of a year) discover where the smell is actually coming from! It's the crawl space under the family room. That room was added on to the back of the house many years ago and it appears that somewhere under there was a sewer clean-out that has been left uncapped. It wasn't a problem until this past spring when we had a major clog in our sewer line repaired. With the sewer line cleared, the sewer gas was then free to travel up the line to the house and to vent out through that open clean-out . . . into the crawl space. And any time the wind blows hard or you turn on the clothes dryer or the furnace, the air flow down there pulls the smell into the basement. Whee.
So now Chris will have to crawl into the creepy-crawly infested crawl space, go around the concrete steps that are still under there from what used to be the back door of the house, and find that open line and seal it. At the same time he wants to clear out the PILES AND PILES of spare lumber and paneling and various other completely unidentifiable pieces of junk the previous owner decided to store under there. Some of which we are almost certain he must have dropped down in there while they were building the family room and we can only hope we will be able to pull out through the access hole. More whee.
