Numeromancy

For the next four months, my life will be rather full.  Tax season is coming up.  As of this week, I'm required to work 50 billable hours per week.  In a couple of weeks that will increase to 55, and then to 60.  This is billable hours, that we can charge clients for, and thus does not include time spent planning work, checking voicemail, etc. The 60-hour weeks are from roughly March 1st through April 15th.  This is what we call "tax season" in the biz.

Now, the interesting thing I've done to myself is this:  I'm taking the fourth CPA exam on February 9th, about 4 weeks from now. That means that I'll be putting in several study hours each week...thus in a sense, I'm going to be doing 60+ hours of accounting from now until April, with a small respite in mid to late February.  I could have held off until after tax season, but I'm ready to be done with studying.  So, I've accepted that this will suck, as it will be a limited duration suck.

I have heard of people who "typically" work 60, 70, or even 80 hours in a typical week.  Constantly.  There is no season.  Personally, I don't understand why anyone would consent to work such a schedule.  I'm sure money is part of it.  People are working these insane hours for the six figure salary...but for me, that would never, ever be worth it.  I like doing things with my life.  I like spending time with my husband, and cooking, and doing creative things.

I'm looking forward to doing a lot of that after April 15th.
