02 ➟ 【Dreamers】 a munto fansoundtrack

Feb 13, 2010 20:55

There's a lot I could say about this series, but basically this post sums up a lot of my thoughts.  Quote: "I think I have more fondness for this series than I would for others because it wasn’t discussed very much. Being underrepresented in the blogosphere allowed me to form my own opinions and to create my own fond memories. Memories that remained untarnished because it wasn’t the next big thing from KyoAni and it didn’t need a hatedom to compete with its fandom and talk about how overrated it was. Because it wasn’t overrated, it was just…what it was." Unquote. So true. oh and did anyone see the ending scene to the movie version where he comes looking for her?

So, Yumemi and Munto. They share a unique relationship that transcend their respective worlds, and I believe that they share a deep connection with each other.  I mean, a bond was created between them when their minds melded, their memories flowed through the said link into each other. Given time, that could change into a more romantic relationship. She touched his heart, and he grows closer to her in that sense and is even more hesitant to reach out for her help as a result of this, afraid that if he does, she would disappear in an instant, a theory that terrifies him so. But in the end, he decided that she is the only one he wants to protect. Yumemi on the other hand, is insecure about herself and wonders what Munto sees in her. In time, she becomes more confident of herself and offers her help to Munto in saving his nation.

Why two parts? Uhmm, just that the songs with Japanese vocals don't quite match with the other songs I've picked for this mix; but being the hoarder I am, I was adamant on including them in this, hence the split. I thought it worked out pretty well too. Disc one is mainly songs sung by Japanese artists -- their voices sound a little similar to Yumemi to imo, whilst Disc Two is mainly English songs. The former starts off with an instrumental piece to set the mood, and then swings into the more upbeat songs before ending in calm, soothing songs; the first half of the latter is mainly filled with more ballads and character songs, gradually building up to Munto's song (Viva la Vida) and Yumemi's (The Climb) signifying their character growth. Admittedly, everything is a little mish-mash, but yes, I'm still learning :3

Finally, another big thank you to perfectzz who once again was the receipient of my constant grumbling and complaints all throughout the process of making this mix, and also for helping me out with the cover. So, enjoy!

dreamers❙a munto/yumemi fst She was a dreamer, she supposed. She was a dreamer in the same way she was torn between the fine line distinguishing what was real and what was illusion. What was something only she saw and knew, or something only she imagined. Wild crimson hair and golden eyes, like the rising sun, flashed before her. A vast expanse of water, a hand outstretched to her and salty tears flowing freely, hands reaching, clasping, of a young girl and boy, of another girl and a king. She smiled, and leaned against the cool wall, eyes and ears drinking in the low hum of smoky moving wisps, a glowing fire’s descent, and the pleasant memory of someone's fingertips ghosting over hers. Then he must be a dreamer too. Alternate cover (Quoted from this fanfic, so all credit goes to the original author! This mix was also partially inspired by said fic :3)

01.silent flight, sleeping dawn - mono
  [instrumental]

02. shining ray - janne da arc
all his life, his people and country is the most important thing to him. he's doing all he can do prevent the future that might come, leaving no time to do anything else. when he mets yumemi however, he finally finds something he wants to protect,  someone he must protect. the first time he's wanted to do anything for his own sake, and not his people's.

Taking the helm, I spread out the map of miracles I had shut in my heart
And thought, "What course can I set that will lead to a more amazing tomorrow?"
There were times I lost my way, aiming for the sky and searching for a dream
But it wasn't a dream: I found my amazing self when I met you

03. mellow melody - ceui
i would elaborate more, but gahh, coherency fails me right now. in any case, the meaning in the lyrics for this song are pretty clear: that of munto watching over yumemi and silently protecting her from harm.

May this innocent girl’s prayers
Take flight for the skies of hope.
I sighed, but time resumes its flow before long,
Even though I stood my ground, alone.

Picking up the courage to step out,
Let’s head off into the wind.
If your heart should get lost,
Seek out the melody the girl sings as she sets forth

04. mahou no hito (magic person) - oku hanako
very patchy translation that i whipped up in less than ten minutes here, so forgive the lyrics. anyway, yumemi is thankful for munto and his presence in her life, but most of all for the changes he made to her life. because he was there, she was able to overcome her insecurities and shyness, believe in herself once more and finally take a step forward in life.

I didn't know the true colour of the sky until now
You tell me that you're like me, that we're similar
Forget the past and the future which advances
Because the power of belief can change people
Because you laughed, I laughed too

I thank you for this miracle of a meeting
Now I do not fear the road in front of me which I will be walking from now on anymore
Because I am guided by someone with magical hands
I laughed, because you are laughing too

05. fields of hope - rie tanaka
a calm, soothing song for the end of the series. the lyrics are pretty irrelevant, but i wanted to include this song anyway, if only just for the vibe it gives off. "that is the promise of our future"..doesn't that line sound great?

I watched as you dreamed
You laughed like a child So dear, and yet so far -
That is the promise of our future

06. forever song - josh pyke
self explanatory, i hope? by "burden" it means the task of saving munto's world from falling into ruins. that world might not be hers, but even so, someone needs her help for the first time in her life, and she finally feels like she can do something to help. overcoming her insecurity, she decides to take a chance and do what she thinks is right.

history tells us of worlds we'll know nothing of
then retrospect becomes a shackle tight on the ankles of us
oh, in the future we trust
we cross our fingers like some kids telling lies

i want to know that i know what i'm talking about
i'd hate to see this thing we've developed
become your burden or my waste of time
but when i'm sure that i know what i'm talking about
i'll take your burden if you say it's mine

07. miageru ano sora de - aira yuuki
an uplifting song to reflect yumemi's feelings after parting with munto. uplifting because she's finally come to terms with her own power; instead of hating it, she comes to accept it, and maybe even appreciate it. after all, it was what led her to munto :3

Remember on your sky,
What looked to be the shadow of you standing in the wind
Was but a mistaken impression born of nostalgia.
It’s fine with me if my feelings would just get to you.
It was a tender dream that we shared, and those sadly twinkling
Stars that I see when I look up at the sky are my tears.

08. i'm going back there someday - paula jarvis
A more quiet and calming song to end off the first part of this mix. The first three lines of this song: she feels like the two of them are close to each other even though they've only known each other for a couple of days in reality. In this case, the bond that runs between them go deeper than any acquaintanceship -- after all, they are so similar in so many ways -- she with her special ability which isolated her from her friends, he with his duties and responsibilities..after all, who else could understand each other as well? In a sense, they are misfits in their own world. hence that line "is that a song there, and do i belong there? i've never been there, but i know the way."

This looks familiar, vaguely familiar,
Almost unreal, yet, it's too soon to feel yet.
Close to my soul, and yet so far away.
I'm going to go back there someday.

Sun rises, night falls, sometimes the sky calls.
Is that a song there, and do I belong there?
I've never been there, but I know the way.
I'm going to go back there someday.

01.strange and beautiful - aqualung
(munto to yumemi) she's an existence he can't understand nor comprehend; nevertheless, he will continue protecting her.

I've been watching your world from afar,
I've been trying to be where you are,
And I've been secretly falling apart, I'll see.

To me, you're strange and you're beautiful,
You'd be so perfect with me but you just can't see,
You turn every head but you don't see me.

02. when it rains - paramore
i think this is song is for those people who refuse to seek help, hence the line :"just running away from all the ones who love you"  munto is proud and stubborn to a fault, but he is also courageous and he needs yumemi's help to save his country. nevertheless, after seeing her memories he hesitates and is unwilling to ask for help, afraid that she will disappear in an instant when he does so. also, the line "you made yourself a bed....it's not the reason you don't see the sun anymore" refers to yumemi and her fear of her own ability which causes to block out other people from her life and to carry an umbrella around. And when it rains

On this side of town it touches, everything
Just say it again and mean it
We don't miss a thing
You made yourself a bed
At the bottom of the blackest hole (blackest hole)
And convinced yourself that It's not the reason you don't see the sun anymore

And when it rains
Will you always find an escape?
Just running away
From all of the ones who love you
From everything
You made yourself a bed
At the bottom of the blackest hole (blackest hole)

03. ordinary day - vanessa carlton
this song is about how munto reached out towards yumemi and changed her life from that moment onwards. at first, she was unsure and insecure of herself, unwilling to put herself into another situation where she might have to learn the hard way that no one else sees what she sees --that munto is just another vision. but nevertheless, she takes his hand and offers him her help; never knowing how much it might change both the two of them.

Just a day, Just an ordinary day.
Just trying to get by.
Just a boy, Just an ordinary boy.
But he was looking to the sky.
And as he asked if I would come along

And he said take my hand,
Live while you can
Don't you feel your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand
And as he spoke, he spoke ordinary words
Although they did not feel
For I felt what I had not felt before
And you'd swear those words couldn't heal.

And as I looked up into those eyes
His vision borrows mine.
And I know he's no stranger,
For I feel I've held him for all of time.

04. trust me - the fray
yumemi, who has always been able to see what she calls 'islands in the sky' is isolated from everyone else around her due to this special ablility; munto, speaks frequently about a fate he foresaw, and has taken steps to bring about a more favourable future for everyone, is unable to have a proper childhood. the two of them are misfits, if you want to put it that way, in their respective worlds, but when with each other, maybe they aren't all that different from each other after all.

Alone and I'm in between,
The place that I'm from and,
The place that I'm in;
A city I've never been.

But I found a friend or should I say a foe?
Said there's a few things you should know.
We don't want you to see.
We come and we go.
Here today, gone tomorrow.

05. i'm yours - the script
for the first time in his life, there is something, or rather someone, other than his country & his people, that he needs and wants to protect. she's seen through his defences, she knows his innermost fears, she knows of his despair at his parents' death..and she is still willing to stick by him through it all, risking everything for a country that isn't even hers. at the very least, all he can do is to protect her and her, because she's just that precious.

You touch these tired eyes of mine
And map my face out line by line
And somehow growing old feels fine
I listen close for I'm not smart

You wrap you thoughts in works of art
And they're hanging on the walls of my heart

I may not have the softest touch
I may not say the words as such
And though I may not look like much
I'm yours

And though my edges may be rough
I never feel I'm quite enough
It may not seem like very much
But I'm yours

06. endless song of happiness - yael naim
the lyrics are pretty self explanatory, i think. it's about yumemi and the 'islands' she could see in the sky. a humming sort of tune that i can absolutely imagine her humming to while walking around the neighbourhood with the brilliant blue sky behind her back, no longer obscuring her face and sight with the umbrella she used to carry around.

she just floats in her world (la-la-la)
and he tries to touch she recoils,
doesn't know you sit in the corner and look at her (ba)
in the evening you wake up from sleep
see an open window and aren't sure what happened to her,
what she had done you fear she has jumped (tza)
outside she is flying on a little cloud
she built a transparent tower with a paintbrush
and inside it all the angels fly
and all the little fairies dance in a circle turning round endlessly

07.the climb - miley cyrus
well this song is pretty popular with amv makers of this show. basically, this song is all about yumemi and all the struggles she has deals with through the story --her seeing magical islands floating in the sky when no one else sees her. her insecurity, her bewilderment at munto's needing her help. this song starts out shaky, a person who can't find it to believe in herself but nevertheless managed to overcome everything and face the world head on. to me, that's who yumemi is.

I can almost see it
That dream I'm dreaming but
There's a voice inside my head sayin,
You'll never reach it,

Every step I'm taking,
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking but I
Got to keep trying
Got to keep my head held high

The struggles I'm facing,
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes they knock me down but
No I'm not breaking I may not know it
But these are the moments that I'm going to remember most yeah
 Just got to keep going
And I, I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on

08. viva la vida - coldplay  the lyrics are pretty irrelevant in this case -- i only thought the feel of the song fits munto's character pretty well. listen, and you'll see what i mean. however, the line " be my mirror, my sword and shield" should be referring to yumemi; how she shows him his true self or what he could be when she stands up to him; his shield in the sense that she protects him from falling into despair and his sword by the way she slices away his fear when she reached out to him and offered him her hand.

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
