So, air conditioning failed on Friday due to the drain line being clogged. I recognized that when it was late, so no idea when it failed. The temperature has not been terrible here (it's the combination with the humidity that has triggered yesterday's warnings), and it had basically been coming on in evenings to remove the day's heat, and then off for the rest of the day.

Christine has a poor reaction to the air condition failing, and Friday night, she was very distressed. A thunderstorm was passing to the east and the sky alight -- and we lost power. So then there was very very little to be done. It was hard for me to go to sleep, because part of my noticing the HVAC was out was that i was finding the CPAP very loud. (Then i realized there was no air circulation, etc.) We have battery backups for the CPAPs so we could use them while the power was out. I don't know why i was having such a sensory reaction to the CPAP; Christine didn't notice it being louder than usual. Anyhow: woke when power came back on and turned off the bedroom "smart" lights from bed. Woke later and turned off other lights.

It was a rare storm for us to loose power but everyone else (in our local family) to be fine.

I'd had a bad week.... month... for executive functioning. I've dropped my exercises and a variety of other things, and the air conditioning fail became a maintenance on my part fail.

When i woke for the day, i had a round of self recriminations. Christine had her own elephant related issue. The day was spent with us both slowly unpacking our own emotional baggage, plus visits to under the house to sop up water from the tiny overflow ... cup? It's really tiny. Christine dealt with a dead mouse and tried to get all the arachnid carcasses. On my turn i took photos and understood that it wasn't draining the way Dad's system drains, and thus there was no maintenance access for the maintenance i had thought about and procrastinated on. That task wasn't possible. There was a huge dead spider that lead to quite a yelp.

Eventually, the strategy was to add more volume to the overflow system and try to get the electrical switch higher PLUS getting the humidity in the house down below 50%. (I had a cognitive misfire the first times we tried to get the air conditioner back by NOT run the dehumidifier because i knew the air conditioning would pull the moisture out -- but that's why it was shutting off. Doh.) The dehumidifier puts out heat as it condenses the water out of the air, so we ended up heating up the house pulling the water out. Dry air is so comfortable. We sat on the front porch as another thunderstorm roared across us, the percussion of billions of raindrops striking leaves creating a wall of "pink noise" that made discussion challenging and nearly drowned out the thunder crackling and crashing above the house. When we went inside, it was cooler outside, but it felt cooler inside because of the dampness evaporating from our clothes. We rigged the air conditioning after the storm and chilled the house down a great deal.

Today we'll run fans to keep air circulating -- although the HVAC is still up, so the circulating fans should run with no condensation issues -- keep an eye on the humidity and keep it down, then hope the air can run in the evening. I think the exterior of the house is cool enough that the 10°F warmer temperatures predicted for today should take a while to seep in. Rinse and repeat until we hear from HVAC folks.
