Title: This Is The Rise And The Fall

Aug 08, 2008 19:26

Other than being an interesting idea this has no redeeming value. :D Probably has slash in it but I can't ever tell what straddles the line between gen, pre-slash and actually slash.

Fandom: House M.D.
The first line of dialog  in each new section comes from the song "Okay, I Believe You but My Tommy Gun Don't." by 'Brand New'. So, technically songfic? Wow, I'm lame. :D As always, un-beta-ed. Also, AU. Because I don't watch TV shows in order. Unless I do a marathon, and I have yet to do a marathon of House.

"I think in decimals and dollars."

Vogler is the most disgusting man House has ever had the misfortune of meeting. He has no idea what it takes to run a hospital, convinced that it can be run the same way a business can be run. House knows better. People aren't packages that are waiting to be shipped. House is callous, maybe even cruel. He tells it like it is, not how he wishes it were, but when he diagnoses a disease he does it because that is what he does best. He doesn't do it for the money, though that is an obvious perk. He does it because he's the best.

"I am the cause to all your problems?!" Wilson stares at House, incredulous. "I think you need to explain this to me, because I was pretty sure that the cause to your problems came in a pill bottle!" He paces House' office. "Obviously, I was wrong!" House hates it when Wilson gets all sarcastic; usually it is accompanied by arm waving and a heaving bosom. "Don't you dare start comparing my chest to a bosom, because I swear, it'll be the last straw." House manages to portray a wide-eyed innocence that freaks Wilson out enough to make him stop talking.

***

"I hope you come down with something they can't diagnose." Cutthroat Bitch stopped at the door and threw that remark at House with a kind of venom only betrayed women can have. It didn't hurt him as much as she hoped it would. What was the point when it had already happened? He just watched her leave and he wished her luck so quietly that no one heard. Later on, when she and Wilson started dating, while he drank himself to sleep, he really wished that he hadn't.

***

"Oh, it's so hard to have someone to love." House didn't mean for it to come out as sarcastic as it did. Wilson didn't even bother to get angry, he just walked out. House pulled out his pill bottle, rattled it a bit, and then popped two in his mouth. This time, it didn't help.

"At least pretend you didn't want to get caught." Cuddy didn't seem to understand that 'getting caught' was the whole goal and at least as fun as actually doing whatever it was that she seemed to think that he had done. "If I didn't get caught, would I have been able to lavish upon you the attention you deserve?" He could actually see her blood-pressure rising, he wondered if he could get her so angry that her head would explode. "I shouldn't have to warn you, House." "Yet, you do it anyway." She glared at him, “Next time I might not be able to convince the board that you are a much needed resource." "As long as you still need me, I might be able to withstand the absolute horror."

***

"It's all from watching T.V." Wilson lightly bumped his shoulder against House's. "I know that's not true." "It is! Everything I know about medicine, I learned from General Hospital." House snagged a piece of pizza off the coffee table and munched on it as he tried to convince Wilson with his eyes. He leaned against Wilson casually and blamed the spinning of his head on the wine, of which he had consumed a lot of before Wilson had even arrived. It was their Thursday ritual. Pizza, wine and mostly playful flirting. He tried to convince himself that it didn't mean anything.

***

"It hurts to always have to be honest with the one that you love." Wilson closes his eyes in an attempt to not hear what House was saying. Of course, it doesn't work. "You don't love me." House sneers at him, and isn't that such a loving look on him? "I've tried to convince myself that I'm not. I'm not as good at lying to myself as I used to be." House is drunk and leaning against the Wilson's apartment door. He knew that this was a bad idea when he hopped into the taxi. He knew it was a bad idea when he knocked on Wilson's door. He knows it's a bad idea now with Wilson looking at him like he just kicked his puppy. "Do you always look like that when your friends confess profound and everlasting love?" "I can't believe you just said that." "I can't believe you haven't invited me in for a nightcap." Verbal tennis has always been their thing.

***

"I just want to believe." "Then, do it." "I don't think I can."
