No during-episode commentary tonight 'cause I'm trying to teach myself to spin using the long draw. (I'm very much a short draw spinner). But ( observations )
Yeah, I get what you're saying about Dean but I don't think Dean really counts his own "deaths" in Mystery Spot and he didn't remember how close he came to dying in IMToD. I got the impression he was referring to them both having died and come back only once.
Also, while I certainly think his reaction to Sam's death would be far different now than it was back in AHBL1, I can't believe that he would have been able to have a (mostly) calm conversation right after Sam died. The sight of Lucifer!Sam (soul death, if not a physical one) in 5x04 brought him to tears. I can't picture Dean have less of a reaction then that if Sam actually bought it, especially not if he witnessed the death. Plus, let's be honest: the Winchesters survive a whole hell of a lot that really ought to have killed them! :)
TLDR; I definitely agree that Dean would not now make another deal to bring Sam back and I also agree that the whole suicidal "I failed at everything, will go kill myself now" emotional response would not be so extreme, but there would be more than just a "Sammy!"
You know, I agree. I hadn't thought about his reaction in 5.04 in those terms. (I haven't had a chance to rewatch any of season 5, partly though being less obsessive than I was last season, and partly because I'm in a particularly stressful part of earning my degree.) But yeah, you're completely right-- he wasn't just upset that Sam had said yes, that Sam had given in and therefore completed the process of the apocalypse, but that Sam was dead.
A lot of people seem pretty sure that Sam was dead there so I could very well be mistaken. I think it's pretty subjective, I just know which theory makes more sense to me. Plus for all that things have been wicked strained between them recently, whenever Sam has been hurt in front of Dean, he breaks out the uber protective mindset again. He did it last episode too, when Gary!Sam was pitched across the room. :)
I don't actually blame you for not rewatching season five. I've only rewatched a couple of episodes myself. I've been so generally underwhelmed by this season that even those I only rewatched once. Plus, you know, you've got real life issues and those sort of take precedence over watching a TV show.
Even if Sam was dead, it's a slightly different situation than other times he might-have-been-dead because there was an archangel, someone who could, easily, fix him no matter what.
I feel like the season may have recently turned a corner, because I'm suddenly feeling like I want to rewatch it from the start (which, sadly, might make me cranky about it again.) I can't honestly say much about quality of this season vs. others, though, for two reasons. One, I miss the feel of season 2, and have never been pleased by the apocalypse storyline. Two, I watched seasons 1, 2, 3 and most of 4 on DVD/iTunes, and therefore back-to-back in a way that I obviously can't with season 5. This week-to-week viewing experience seriously changes how I think of the show. I just can't be as obsessive about a show that I have to wait week-to-week for (it's just my nature) so I can't tell if that's part of why I don't like this season as much, or if, as I suspect, it's at least partly because the season just isn't as good...
