Chapter 3

It was indeed awkward.

And the silence killed them.

Yet out of the three, one person didn’t mind the silence. Actually he didn’t even care. All he focused was on his stomach and the large slice of pizza in his hand.

“D-Do you like the pizza?” Shiwon broke the awkward silence as he smiled shyly at Heechul.

Heechul smiled back and responded with a nod. “Although I do feel a bit bad…eating delicious food while my poor brother doesn’t get any at the hospital…always stuck with the same soup and rice everyday…”

“We should buy food for your brother! Does he like sushi? Maybe we can send him delivery!” Shiwon brightly suggested.

“Yeah…sushi that’d be nice…” Heechul smiled sadly. “But it’s so expensive-”

“Nonsense! It’ll be my gift to them,” Shiwon smiled. “Where is the hospital? I can put one on delivery right now-”

“It’s fine, really.” Heechul shook his head. “However I do plan on visiting him soon…”

“You should take some on your next visit!” Shiwon smiled as Hangeng nodded silently in agreement. “I’ll probably be in school…maybe Hangeng can go with you?”

“Yeah, I don’t mind coming…” Hangeng smiled.

“Hah, thanks…I really appreciate but I prefer going alone…”

“Oh…right…I understand…” Shiwon bit his lips slightly as he turned to Hangeng. “If you want, you can come with me to school as a visitor…you’ll be able to see Hyuk-oh I mean, Eunhyuk again!”

“Yeah! I miss that guy…” Hangeng smiled. “Is he alright?”

“Who? Eunhyuk?”

“Yeah…I remember all that stuff happen before I left to China…”

“Oh yeah…well…I admit it was rough on him…but he got over it…he’s been partying a lot lately…makes me kind of worried for him…”

“What’s wrong with partying?” Heechul blurted out as bits of pizza flew from his mouth.

“N-Nothing…” Shiwon smiled uneasily.

“Whatever…” Heechul stood from his seat. “I’m going to bed.”

Shiwon and Hangeng watched as the other boy rudely left. Hangeng bit his lips uneasily as he then looked across to Shiwon.

“Shiwon…you’ve been my good friend for years…but why-”

“I know. I know what you’re trying to say…” Shiwon smiled sadly as he looked back at his friend. “But…I just got his feeling…I know it may not be going the right direction…but it never hurts to try…”

“I see…” Hangeng looked at the other boy sadly. “Does he make you happy?”

“I-I don’t know yet…”

“You don’t even know him-”

“I’d like to get to know him.”

Hangeng felt his lips quiver slightly as he felt his heart broke into a million pieces. He then stood from his seat as he began clearing the table, starting with Heechul’s plate.

“You can go take a shower…I’ll clean up everything here…”

“Hangeng…I’m sorry-”

“Don’t apologize,” Hangeng smiled. “I’m happy for you. I guess that saying is true…”

Shiwon looked at the other boy apologetically.

“As long as the person you love is happy…than you’re happy…” Hangeng smiled sadly. “Your happiness is my happiness…”

Shiwon didn’t know what to say.

“I’m sorry I’m only making things awkward again, I’ll stop…really…” Hangeng smiled as he scratched his head. “You can go take your shower now…”

Even though Hangeng had confessed his love to Choi Shiwon the prior year, Shiwon kindly rejected the other boy. Yet Shiwon continued to pretend as if the confession never happened. Hangeng was happy with that and assumed that Shiwon was straight. As long as they could continue to be friends despite the awkward confession…Hangeng was satisfied.

But seeing Shiwon falling for another guy…

Hangeng didn’t know how he was going to take it.

Kim Heechul frowned heavily as he felt a nudge on his shoulder. He really hated to be woken up early in the morning. He’d often warn Donghae and Kibum not to wake him up so early or he’d get really cranky. That’s right…Kibum…Kibum was with him almost since the beginning…they had been together for almost seven years and the smaller boy would often get nightmares and wake him up in the middle of the night…

“K-Kibum? W-What is it?” Heechul frowned as he woke up only to see someone who was not Kibum.

“Ah, I’m sorry for waking you up so early!” Shiwon smiled apologetically. “Don’t worry! You’ll never be seeing that guy again!”

“Oh…um...yeah! Thanks!” Heechul kept his cool as he almost forgot his location.

“Anyways, I just wanted to give you something before Hangeng and I leave to school…” Shiwon took out a piece of thin plastic from behind. Heechul’s eyes widened with glee.

“This is my credit card…I want you to keep it and use it if there is any emergency…please don’t be offended…I know you have your pride and you can pay me back later, but I urge you to keep this with you,” Shiwon smiled as he pressed the card in Heechul’s hands.

“Oh wow…” Heechul lifted the card. “Gee I don’t know what to say…thanks…a lot…I really appreciate it…”

“No problem! Well, we’ll be off; I hope to see you later,” Shiwon smiled as he headed towards the door, only to be stopped by a tug on his arm.

“Shiwon!” Heechul leaned over as he gave the other boy a kiss on the lips. “Thank you.”

Shiwon’s face turned bright red as he responded with a nerve-wracking nod. He then stiffly walked out of the room only to see Hangeng waiting patiently for him.

“Your face looks like a cherry tomato!” Hangeng exclaimed.

“Well, it is getting hot in here…” Shiwon was very happy. “Shall we get going?”

“Yeah.”

“Kibum…” Donghae groaned as he shook the other boy. “S-Someone’s banging on the door…”

“W-Who is it?”

“I don’t know…we’ve been partying all night and stealing wallets…I’m dead tired…”

“Maybe its Heechul hyung…I’ll go get the door…” Kibum stood up from his mat as he stretched his arms. He began to scratch his head as he opened the door only to see a very ecstatic Heechul.

“Geez! It’s about time you guys opened the door!” Heechul cried out. “Kibum, what’s with your hair? Go wash up! And where’s Donghae?”

“W-What?” Kibum frowned as he rubbed his eyes. “Donghae’s sleeping…and I’m sleepy…we both just want to sleep…”

“No, no time for sleeping!” Heechul shook his head as he kicked Donghae awake. “Get up!”

“H-Hyung…w-why?” Donghae slowly got up from his mat, only to see Heechul carrying two hangers with outfits covered by a plastic bag. “W-What’s that?”

“It’s your new school uniforms idiots,” Heechul grinned.

“W-WHAT?” Kibum’s eyes widened in shock as he grabbed one of the uniforms. “Y-You’re kidding!”

Heechul smiled. “Go open it.”

Kibum opened the plastic cover only to reveal the school uniform of the most prestigious private college in the city. “H-Hyung…”

“Okay, Donghae you go put on yours too, we don’t want to be late to school now, do we?”

“Seriously Hangeng…I know you missed me and all, but I would NEVER…NEVER revisit school again just to visit a friend…” Eunhyuk grinned. “…But in a way I am flattered…”

“And you’re still the same…” Hangeng smiled.

“But isn’t it boring to just sit in the back of the classroom and watch? Stupid Shiwon, just when Hangeng gets out of school from China you bring him back to school in Korea!”

“Ahaha, yeah, I feel bad too,” Shiwon smiled as he turned to Hangeng. “But I promise to make it up to you!”

“Ah,” Eunhyuk looked at his watch. “Break period is almost over…have fun watching…”

“But you know…you don’t have to stay in the classroom…if you get too bored you can look around the school, maybe check out the sports team?” Shiwon suggested.

“Sure I’ll do that if I get too bored…” Hangeng nodded.

Both Eunhyuk and Shiwon walked back to their seats as they watched their teacher enter.

“So class…I know it’s almost the middle of the day but apparently we have a new student in the class!” The teacher announced. “Why don’t we give him a warm welcome and give him a round of applause?”

“A new student?” Eunhyuk gave Shiwon a nudge as they watched the new student enter the room. “Too bad this is an all boy’s school.”

“Hello, my name is Lee Donghae. I look forward to studying with you all,” Donghae introduced himself as he gave a small bow.

“I don’t like him,” Eunhyuk whispered in Shiwon’s ear.

“Cut the guy some slack, he’s new, what’s there not to like?” Shiwon defended.

“I don’t know…I just get a feeling…” Eunhyuk whispered back.

“Haha I guess someone would like to show the new student around and be his friend, right Eunhyuk?” The teacher smiled.

“Oh god damn it…” Eunhyuk cursed to himself as he turned to face the teacher with a forced smile. “It’ll be my pleasure.”

“Be nice!” Shiwon nudged as Eunhyuk waved his arm away.

Hangeng took note of the new student as he decided it was about time for him to leave the classroom and roam around the school grounds. He then decided to take up on Shiwon’s suggestion as he headed towards the track field. Hangeng smiled as he breathed in the fresh air. He watched a group of boys running around the track as he then noticed the soccer field beside it. Hangeng decided to watch the soccer game as he sat himself on a bleacher noticing a good looking younger boy sitting silently beside him.

“Do you like soccer?” Hangeng turned to the boy next to him.

“…” The boy threw one blank look at Hangeng as he stood up from his seat and walked away.

Hangeng was quite offended by the sudden rude gesture as he decided to forget about the incident. It wasn’t as if he knew the boy. Plus it would be kind of his fault to start talking without formally introducing himself. But then again introductions could have been made if there was only a response.

Hangeng felt very hurt and rejected.

Kim Kibum was never a social person.

He never really opened up to others or talked out his feelings. The only person he would ever actually talk to was Heechul, but he only made Heechul his one exception. Even Donghae had a difficult time associating with Kibum as Kibum would often ignore him during the first few weeks he stayed with them.

Kibum turned his head briefly to the side as he took one last look at the soccer game before him. Of course he loved soccer. But he just didn’t have the guts to approach the other guys and ask them to play. Asking them to play would mean that Kibum would have to talk to them…get to know them…

The feeling terrified Kibum. He didn’t want it at all. And being suddenly approached by a stranger made him feel even more uncomfortable.

After all…at one point in his life…the one person he trusted most…

…betrayed him.
