So. We had an earthquake that centered very close to my work. It made for a very exciting Tuesday. I felt everything rattle around while I debated on standing under a door way or just going outside. There really wasn't any damage, but it left a lot of people - who had never been in a earthquake before - wondering what the hell just happened.
On Wednesday, we planned to head out to Virginia Beach once I applied for Asuka's passport at the Post Office. What a mistake. They were all kinds of fail, I wasted a couple of hours and still have no passport to show for it. The main problem was that someone didn't charge the camera's two batteries properly and so they couldn't take her photo, plus it was going over into their lunch time (during which the entire PO closes) so needless to say they couldn't help me at all and I had to leave right away for VA Beach. Blargh! To get this damn passport, I have to take time off of work because of their minimal hours, plus I have to make an appointment specifically for the passport department. My only other day off is this Wed. so I will try again then. I'm not feeling very optimistic, however, I won't be going back to the same PO.
We eventually made it to the beach and it always amazes me how the beach areas are such tourist traps. I had hoped for a hotel breakfast and wifi, but they didn't have breakfast, only had ethernet connections, and our rooms had no windows. *sigh* It was all right, though, since there was a nice place to get food at and it was cheap. Overall, we had a great time, but next time I'll insist on Hawaii or something.
Due to the upcoming hurricane, we left for home on Friday morning and didn't visit Williamsburg, but it was nice being home anyway.
The hurricane was pretty scary. We live in the middle of tall trees and it's always a worry that one of them might fall on us, but thankfully none of them did. A few large ones fell over at the neighbor's place, though, but they are wonderfully resourceful people and have already taken care of the debris. We lost power early on and I have no idea when it'll be back. We do have a generator which powers things like the fridge and microwave, as well as some of the main rooms so we have our internet (thankfully Verizon didn't go down although the cable did). We're on a community well, but there is a generator for the water pump which gets turned on during the day; this is one of the more important things for a comfortable living experience.
This morning, once the hurricane was gone, we were bemoaning how we didn't prepare any supplies like batteries and food so I took a trip to our local Food Lion expecting to fight my way through it. Turns out that not only were they running like normal, but no one was there. Easiest trip I ever made.
So we're pretty much fine and living in comfort. Unfortunately the generator won't go on forever so I hope the power comes back on soon. Now I wonder if the daycare or even my work has power. I hope everyone is doing well where ever you are.
