I've decided that this entry is going to be strictly news with no controversial rants whatsoever. As fun as those are, it's nice to take a break once in awhile. Besides, ranting and raving all the time might give people the impression that I'm like this in RL, and in actuality I'm really quiet. I don't usually express my views unless asked directly. Instead, I just listen to what others have to say.
So, here's the latest Ni Hen news. My fiance got a job! I'm so happy, because now we both won't have to sponge off my parents anymore! Yay! :) He's working at a place called Party Pig Superstore (they carry party supplies) as a cashier. We're going out to eat tonight to celebrate him getting the job. My poor cat, Cinnamon, had an irritated eye recently and my finance took her to the vet. The bill was $38, about $20 for the actual examination and $18 for the topical cream. *Cough cough* Rip off *Cough cough* And I'm the one that had to put the gooey shit in her eye because I can handle her better than Dan. In other words, I don't put up with any shit from her. (I think that if we had children, Dan would be the loving mother and I'd be the one yelling, "Shaddup and mow the lawn!" ^_^) My sleeping patterns have been waaay fucked up over the past few days. I get up at about 4am and go to bed at about 11pm. I feel like an old person. ;)
Lately I've been playing an old SNES game called Majoutachi no Nemuri (The Witches' Slumber). It's a horror-text game (it shows pictures in the background and text in the foreground like, "The villagers scream 'Death to the valley person!' and beat you over the head with shovels until you die.") It's actually a really fun game, despite the fact that it's in Japanese, so the text takes a couple minutes to read. The main character, a salaryman, has a dream about a female childhood friend while sleeping on the job, followed by a "prank" phone call in which a woman begs him to save her. Later that night, a buddy of his brings over a newspaper with a story about the girl from the vision -- it seems she's gone missing. This upsets the main character, who thinks that phone call may have been the real deal, and sets off to search for her. It just gets weird from there. It's nowhere near as scary as Clock Tower or the Silent Hill series, but I really like the plot. Knowledge of Japanese is a MUST for playing this game. I really hope someone will decide to release a patch for it, and that they ask me to translate it, and that I recieve critical acclaim for my brilliant work, and then get psychiatric counseling for my delusions of grandeur. ;)
I wish I could get further in Light Fantasy 2. This is a sweetass SNES rpg, even sweeter if you know a little Japanese. You play...a baby. He's supposed to be the savior of the earth (of course), and he does eventually hit puberty. Also on your team is a pacman-esque creature, a baby dragon, a badass prince, a wind-up mermaid doll, a real mermaid, and lots of other weird characters. The neatest feature of this game is that you can recruit random people into your party, like thieves, warriors, and bunny girls. The battles are difficult: you can get killed real easy, and the system takes a bit of getting used to. Right now I'm in a village of cat people trying to convince them of how heroic I am, and I'm stumped as to what I should do next. Gamefaqs is great for this sort of stuff, but unfortunately no one has made a faq for Light Fantasy 2. 残念だな.
I've just got to do the final proof of H2B and then I can send it to the editor. I always do two translations: the first is to get a basic idea of the story, learn the characters' dialect, and soforth (I call this the "WTF Translation"). The second translation involves fixing text errors, figuring out sound effects, and checking to make sure my panel numbers are correct. (I call this "Last Call.") You know you've been a translator too long when you start making up names for your translation phases. ;) H2B is so damn easy. There's no sports shit like Eyeshield 21 and not as much dialogue as Pretty Face. The only thing that bugs me is the ability of the mangaka to pull sound effects out of his butt, namely ンーキバ. ンーキバ?! What the fuck does that mean?! I can't find anything remotely like it in any of my sfx dictionaries. I hate Japanese sound effects. x.x
Oh, and I massively updated Personal Space last night. I added my various LJ rants to my Fragments (of writing) page and finally created a links page with links to lots of cool Japanese resources. Well, that's all for now. I'm going to go play with my ratties and get something to eat!
