I just read an article saying that Warner Brothers now wants Tom Cruise for the lead in ALL YOU NEED IS KILL. Even though the protagonist is about nineteen in the original Japanese novel, they are apparently aging the charater to suit big stars like Pitt and Cruise. While I'm a huge fan of Cruise(I don't care how "crazy" he is. He's The Ultimate Leading Man. There's no one who can command screen like him.), I'm little disappointed that nowadays studios doesn't give chance to young actors. The same old actors are still dominating big movies.
yeah i think the studios are kind of screwing themselves over. i understand their trepidation since few young actors have sold a movie on their own name. but i think relying so much on old actors is a very temporary, and not always successful, fix. though i also think they can't shove someone down our throats a la taylor lautner or even ryan reynolds.
the story is great with a young actor playing the young soldier. that is a fundamental part of the plot... like the guy is a n00b and sucks so he dies and has to live the day over and over again till he gets better. idk how you rewrite the story to make that work for an older dude, especially one that looks like tom cruise. idk. it just doesn't work for me and if they do that, in my opinion it is no longer an adaption of all you need is kill.
my hope, whether zac is involved or not, is that they just bulked up the sergeant role and have sought out a big name like brad pitt or tom cruise to help the young actor carry the film. it just works better for the story lol.
I only read the book, so I have no idea how much it differs from the script. Its main plot is about an unskillful young male soldier and an unusually skilled female soldier, and I don't know how they can make the sergeant role any bigger. I can't see any huge A-list actors agreeing to play second fiddle to a young lesser name actor. And Warners needs a big star to headline this movie since they'll probably need big budget due to big alien battle scenes. Therefore, I think they'd rather change the role and script to fit Cruise or Pitt even if that means sacrificing the story. It's really sad that those "already dominant" againg big actors are now taking over roles that should go to young actors.
i do think they could augment the sergeant role but not too much. though i could see brad pitt doing it, he'll take kind of smaller roles if they are interesting.
i don't know that warners needs a big star. they need a good movie. if studios figured that out, they'd solve a lot of their problems where they are wasting massive amounts of money.

Thank you. Could this be displayed on a long banner, like over the red carpet at the next Academy Awards blow-out? So many of these folks are so busy designing a "package" that they forget that a really good movie will sell tickets even without big stars, but a really bad movie will bomb even with big stars.
