pondering pant pricing

May 06, 2004 15:40

I came to the realization recently that I waste a lot of money. My top 5 cash-hemmhorages, as of the past year, are:

1) Food
2) Drinking
3) Eating Out
4) New Clothes
5) Transportation

Now of the list I have been able to justify 1,2,3, and 5. New Clothes, though, has been the one thing on the list that continues to boggle my mind.

Okay let's just go over a particular example:

Back a year ago I bought some new pants for work. 3 pairs of Khaki's and a pair of grey slacks. On sale. 20$ each on average. Now this wasn't Ross clothes, or Sears Roebuck pants, but decent BR slacks. Okay, so I use each of the four at least once a week. Wash and dry them and re-use them. So, over the past year I've worn each of them once a week every week since I've bought them.

Now contrast this to a pair of designer jeans I picked up somewhere for the price of all of the 4 pants put together. I can't wear jeans to work so the pair just sits in the closet until the weekend. I've worn it three or four times since I bought it.

So case one I have 20$ / (times) 52 = ~ $0.39 (thirty nine cents per use)
Case two I have 100$ / 4 = ~ $25.00 (twenty five dollars per use)

What conclusion(s) can I come to?

1. Buying BR khaki's on sale for work was a better deal than buying a pair of designer jeans for the club.
2. I'd save more money if I focused my clothes purchases on for sale work clothes.
3. I should use the jeans more often.
4. I should stop complaining and go back to studying.

Hmm. What do you think?
