Somehow exactly in the middle of summer, a time when nights in St. Petersburg are most "white", we were able to visit the unusual height - the balustrade of St. Isaac's Cathedral.

The current cathedral, the fourth of its kind, had been building for 40 years and was consecrated in 1858. It is the largest Orthodox church in Saint Petersburg, magnificent and unique silhouette on the appearance of the city, one of the most important architectural landmarks.

We've been trying to find any details on this subject, talked with historians and members of St. Isaac Cathedral - almost no avail. Overall, this place is shrouded in mystery. We know only that the number of angels is due to the number of columns. Ostensibly their appearance due to the need to give some air to the top of the cathedral. Without them the cupola, which diameter is smaller than the circumference of the area with columns, is as if cut off, drowned and looked rough. Angels visually continued each column, smoothly diverting eyes from the powerful granite lines to heaven.
