I love advent because the 4 week countdown builds up the anticipation of Christmas. I fear without advent, the surprise of Christmas actually arriving would jump out from behind a corner and bite my bottom. The expresson on the face of the person who is making sure a little child doesn't start his or her clothes on fire as a shaky hand with a flame is waved somewhere near a candle is invigorating. Also, I love singing Christmas carols, and the louder everyone else sings, the louder I can sing too!
Yesterday I made my form construct Christmas sculptures with aluminum foil as a team building activity. One group made a plate with a turkey dinner on it, another group made a lopsided elf, one group made a scary looking viking snowman and one group made snow balls and threw them at each other instead of making a sculpture. I thought I might get some wreaths, Christmas trees, stars, bells, or angels, but who is to say that the winning sculptures: a scary looking viking and the turkey dinner, don't say Merry Christmas just as well?
I have decided that I'm going to start volunteering with the Leeds Asylum Seeker Support Network. They are a local charity that will pair me with an asylum seeker either to become friends with and provide emotional and other pratical support, or to teach English to for an hour a week. I am going to preference to be paired with a Chinese speaker. I am really excited about this, and think that I will really be able to be a positive influence on someones life. I might like a job in the future working with asylum seekers and refugees, so this might give me some good experience, too. I've already spoke to 2 people to be my references and now I just have to finish filling out the application.
