Awww, that poor red dress

So I did a mock up today in twill for the Red Satin dress. The patern I drafted right onto the fabric was not surpisingly disapointing. I was going on the asumption of treating it like a napped fabric. This was not the case, this material has no nap that I can discern from any direction. It seems like it should, but perhaps it is the affect of the wool that renders the same highlight throught, regardless of veiwing angle.

This could work out to be better. I will have to cut into a second mock up in the twill tomorow after I think on it, and draw out what I want to do. I want to cut things on the cross grain so I can eek out some more circumference at the wasit, and still have some trapezoidial panels. I'm never going to have enough for cartridge pleating with the scant fabric, but I do want *some* pleating at the waist!

I also came across an open fronted gown on Festive Attyre that I hadn't noticed before. I thought that may help me with the problem I'm having of skirtwaist/ bodicwaist ratio. Right now they are really close to the same, but not exactly the same. If I can make the bodice smaller, that would be annother scant ammount to add to the skirt pleats.

I have to try the mockup and see if I can get a bigger skirt. If that fails I'll get some more twill and do one more mockup that is a circle type skirt, so no gathers at the waist at all, but kickass hem circumference by sticking gores in every other way possible.

I assured Paul that this in no way was displacing my costume for New Orleans, because I rean plumb out of ideas I'm sitting on my hands for that project anyway.
