Finally got myself out to Two Mile with Rainy yesterday morning. I love that place. I love THIS place (Pennsylvania). I love the way things cool off at night in the summer and you get a fresh start with comfortable temps each day. I love the green of the grass and richness of the plants. I love the trees and shady walks in the woods. I love the many kinds of twittering bird songs you hear in the summer. I love how the seasons progress and there is always something new.
Dave and I walked the dogs down to the lake last night. It's the first time I've been to the lake since I got back. New plants flowering. The common mullein is towering now. The thistle flowers are long gone and there is fluff in their place. So many of the little flowers that I was trying to learn the names of are all gone and because I didn't learn their names very well I can't remember them at all now! Next summer I will be surprised and have to learn them all over again, like deja vu. The corn is high. Before I left you could see Rainy walking in the field - she was higher than the corn. Now Andy disappears in there. The curly dock is dark red now and makes a sharp accent to the green of everything else. I would have taken a picture but we started our walk very late and came back in the dark. Fireflies everywhere.
In the afternoon I helped Dave can pickled beets. 10 pints in all. There were 3 more pints that didn't fit into the canner. I'm going to make a batch of pickled eggs with them.
Today Candy and I are hiking somewhere - possibly to the Kennerdell Overlook. I'm going to drop off my biggest tent with her before we go. She's having lots of company and grandkids staying over for Tom's wedding in a couple weeks and I offered my tent for the kids to sleep in. I haven't had that tent open for many years though and I'm kind of concerned that it could have gotten moldy in the basement so I want to be there when it gets opened for the first time just in case. If that tent isn't up to the job I have another tent I could lend that is smaller.
