morning in the woods

Once again trying to figure out some trails that branch off this entrance to the Black Gum Hill at Two Mile. Nothing is marked in this area and some trails don't go anywhere at all (they just peter out) so they all need individually explored, and then remembered accurately. I'm afraid I can be forgetful and need to retrace them a few times before I can remember where I want to go next time. I suppose views like this can be boring to the average person but for some reason I love looking at stuff like this.

Forest floor variety.

A sign post over on the edge of my explorations.

Sun breaking through.

Follow up on the ghost pipes. They aren't a fungus. They are a plant without chlorophyll. They get their sustenance from a kind of fungus that lives on tree roots.

Close up of the flower. There is only one flower per stalk.

Another picture of a trail. I guess I love these kinds of pictures cause I can see myself walking forward into the scene. Imagining the future steps.

Some weird black gooey looking fungus. Not really gooey or sticky - just wet. They remind me of barnacles a little bit. Berdella, Jan and I sat on this same log yesterday for a little rest after climbing the big hill. I noticed the fungus then. The "clams" are disintegrating even more today.

hiking alone, 2 mile run, fungus, black gum hill, trails
