Real Update

Been meaning to do a real update of some kind for a while, so expect a weird mix of stuff here...

The fansubbing group I was following has finally released the last episodes of Aquarion. They're weird, but they work very, very well as an ending for the series. I'm quite impressed. Kawamori and his staff didn't wimp out or give us an overly simplified or sugary ending. It's not really happy, but it's not really sad either. More hopeful than anything else. Fits the themes of the series very well, though it is kind of standard for Kawamori. Eureka seveN is interesting, though they're still working on ramping up the plot. They're very good at pulling at the old heartstrings, and have some great action scenes too. And Mushishi is simply very myffic.

Work on my thesis code is going well. I now have "stage 1" of the Python-based network simulator completed and tested. A little more work and I can actually start working on the wireless bits. I'm quite pleased with it. I also feel a lot more confident with Python now, which is a good thing, as it's a wonderful language. Hopefully I'll have all the work on the simulator finished up by mid-February, and can then actually start on my main thesis work. I also have to update the Academics bit of my homepage - IE, actually put some content there.

I really should try to write something each day to stay in practice. I've meant to do this for a long time, but haven't managed to do it. I think one problem could be taking things too seriously and overthinking them, rather than just writing. I plan to attempt to correct this. I may even post some of the results here/on my site, if I manage to produce anything I'm happy with.

I'm enjoying the marking position I've got this term so far. Guidelines are much looser than the ones I had to deal with last time, but that's kind of fun. And I actually get to teach a little! The Learning Centre's more interesting too, as I appear to have landed some high-activity shifts.

Not had much look finding good books lately. Tried a lot, found a lot of total crud. Science fiction seems to be especially bad. Very frustrating. Perhaps my standards have just been raised too much by authors like Bujold and Pratchett and all the excellent writing going on in webcomics these days? I don't know. Most sci-fi and fantasy just feels stale, boring, and unimaginative by comparison.

Now that we've actually got a backyard, I think I'm going to look into starting a small garden for fresh veggies, etc. Store-bought veggies around here are always kind of... Questionable.

That Nobilis game I tried to organize has now officially died. Grr!
