The first time Helen Magnus went off-world, she got shot in the shoulder by a land-born octopus carrying a six-shooter and wearing the intergalactic equivalent of a ten-gallon hat.

This. Is. Absurd, she'd thought at the time. But it got much worse.

She’d been forced to duel against a troupe of space-faring saloon girls and had very nearly been outdone. Were it not for Kate’s quick action with her 9mm, Helen might well have been little beyond a memory. As it was, her body’d gained another hole for the trouble.

Next dawn, she and her team limped back through the stargate to Earth.

Someone else can run a Sanctuary out there Helen had unexpectedly retired.

Dear St. Nicholas,

My life has gone terribly off-course if I'm appealing to an overweight man in a red velvet suit who slides down chimneys for help, but c'est la vie, I suppose.

I suppose you could say I've had a trying few years, or perhaps even a trying lifetime. It has been a very long lifetime, I'm afraid, and I've seen quite a few impossible things come true, even been the catalyst to a number of them. But the one the one impossible thing I would like, even at cost to that past, is to have my daughter returned to me.

I have lost many friends and relatives to be sure, but her loss has shaken me to my very core. I have forgotten more joy than I have ever known and think I shall forget more still. I know I ask the impossible and perhaps it should be God I seek rather than myth, but I've run out of avenues for appeal. If you are as real as your fiction and as powerful as the joy you bring to the world, I ask that you bring her back to me. No more and no less. I would be forever grateful.

Kind regards,

Helen Magnus

Dear Santa,

Will you make me big and strong? Henry says I have to be big for mommy to let me go on retree mish out with her at night. He says that's when she gets all the bad monsters who hide under kids' beds and make them scared. She does it because she loves all the girls and boys in the world almost as much as she loves me. That's what she said. But I know she really goes to get the bad monster out there, because the bagg- boogeyman hiding under her bed is too strong and she can't fight him all by herself. But I promise, if you make me big and strong, I'll make him stop the bad dreams that make mommy cry. I'll send the John-man far, far away where he can't hurt her anymore.

Then, I'll hide Henry's videogames in SHU like he does me and then he'll cry. He's such a baby. I'm not a baby, though, I'm mommy's best assistant. But I gotta be fast now, Santa. Can you help?

Please and thank you,

Ashley Magnus, age 7
