I read one of the scariest essays ever today. It was titled, 'Science Will Solve the Population Problem' He went througha timeline, supposing what scientific advances could be acheived to heighten population possibilities. It starts out simple, like killing all the animals and using all the land for farming (so of course eliminating meat consumption), and really cashing in on aquaculture. That gets us up to 400 billion.
When we get to 50 trillion, we start doing things like human cadavers, and human waste. We also have to roof over the oceans to provide housing.
He goes as far as 40 quadrillion, at which point we have built 2,000 storey buildings on every square kilometre of the planet, population density is 120 people per square meter, the ocean are alternately compressed and evaporated to cool down the thermal output of 40 quadrillion humans, and people are only allowed to move about their own apartment buildings- which still gives them 1 million possible friends.
After reading that, 6.3 billion doesn't seem so bad.
