So my dad bought an antenna in time for us to watch the Olympic opening ceremony in HD. It was way different from what I was expecting, but in a good way.
If only the commercials were taken out. It'd have been way more epic (not to mention probably half as long). But it was still awesome nonetheless (Zhang Yimou's obvious obsession with colors and exaggerated outfits [every single long outfit had a huuuuge skirt, why?] finally was of use to the world). Go China!
Though I have to admit that the
Coca-Cola Commercial was adorable. Little birdies! So cute. ^______^
So the twinkly, floating Olympic rings were amazing. I wanted them so much. And then they winked out, like magic! I want that technology.
In fact, all of the technology was spectacular. Giant LED scroll and huge surround video screen on the Bird's Nest? Phenomenal looking. That would have been wonderful to see in person, but I'd definitely pass on the endless nation walk and ridiculous humidity.

I'd like to thank the NBC announcers, you did a pretty decent job of explaining the different parts of the performance. I know there were quite a few parts that I wouldn't have understood if you or my parents had not been there.
However, this random globe trotting part, made no sense at all (it reminded me of The Little Prince though). Not that I blame the NBC announcers for not being able to explain it; I don't think anyone knew what that was. There is also no explanation for that 你和我 song, which sounded like a lullaby when sung by Sarah Brightman. Why Sarah Brightman and why in that voice?
Where was Jay Chou, btw? I thought he was possibly going to perform. Bother. They could have stuck him in Sarah Brightman's place. He can totally do a falsetto.

Yao Ming is hilarious in his freakish height. I loved the random people sneaking pictures with him (sort of, in that he's in the picture, or at least his shoulder is) during his NBC interview.
And obviously China is demonstrating that anything can be improved by the addition of small children. Cute ones, of course. But that little kid bothered me a lot because HIS FLAG WAS UPSIDE DOWN! Did no one notice this when approving him for random walking around? They wrote on his shirt (to prevent him from getting lost in the crowd of miscellaneous kids?) but failed to notice that his flag was upside down? Hmmmm, attention to detail, we do not have it. Or was it on purpose, to show some sort of mourning? <---not likely though. God that bothered me. Especially since they kept zooming in on him (thus affirming the Beijing Olympic people's idea that kids=instant awesome and glory).

The umbrellas with children's faces were a bit creepy though.
I mean, I get the whole children are our future, but we can spend a little bit of time celebrating those people above the age of 12, okay? I liked that the old people handed off the Olympic flag. They looked cute too. <--in a neat and presentable way

And Hu Jingtao does not sweat. I swear.
And did George Bush not feel like buying Laura a pair of binoculars (I can't find an image to prove this, but she really didn't have one)?

Li Ning running and lighting the flame was great.
Seriously nerve-racking though. The first time he shifted wires, I thought he was falling. That would've been horrible, as would have his torch going out. It really looked like it had stopped burning when he was going up towards the giant torch. But it worked out in the end, and the giant stadium didn't burn down.
But really, Olympic Opening Ceremony, you win. With so many sparkly lights, fireworks, random people dances, and insanely cool technology (twinkly lights will be mine!).
