Umbridge Theory
I just realized I never posted this here, which is just absurd because you are the people that will have the most fun with this. It's not my theory, btw. This is all courtesy of Beelzebub's amazing, innocent brain. After watching HP:DH1 in anticipation of DH2's release, we were talking about why Umbridge was so mean and evil and I said, "Honey, sometimes people just ARE that way."
He looked at me in shock and said, "But I don't think she is. She's wearing the locket."
Me: But she's always been mean and evil.
Him: Well, but she's always had the locket.
Me: No...
And that's when my brain kicked into gear. The Weasley's, Harry, Hermione, and Sirius cleaned out the dining room of Grimmauld Place AT THE BEGINNING of OotP. Mundungus could have stolen the locket THAT DAY and gone to sell it (just as the Weasley twins stole the doxies). Umbridge could have been wearing it (and slowly falling deeper under its influence) since Harry's expulsion hearing.
It's also possible she wasn't, but doesn't that sort of blow your mind? It creates a huge possibility for a massive redemption arc for her character, should someone wish to write that. *hint, hint*
Also, if this has been mentioned before and it's seriously "old news" theory, yeah... Just ignore me. :P
