Yesterday, I bought my fourth snowboard. Kinda funny that I go through them so quickly. The first one (which I won at some X or Gravity Game or other) I accidentally ruined by leaning it too close to a heating vent. I tried to ride the bubbled-up board, but it was not to be. The second was perfect: except the moron who installed the bindings didn't use washers. As a result, the screws were driven straight into the board and it soon began to crack. I went to the best snowboard shop from then on, but the sales guy convinced me that I wanted speed. I didn't realize fully that I'd be giving up easy turning. So I bought a gorgeous K2 Luna board, engineered for womyn and everything, and I rode it maybe 10 times. Fast yes, but it steered like a mack truck. Gone was the light board I could turn with slight variations in my stance. Gone was the board that I was starting to jump with. Instead I had to kick out my back foot for every turn, lean heavily to slow or speed up. Ick.
So now that's been traded for the thinnest, lightest board I've ever felt, 9 centimeters shorter than my Luna. She's white with a purple hummingbird on her. And a purple honeysuckle wrapping around both sides of the board. Her wings are irridescent. I'm moving beyond my adoration of purple, but she's just the right size and shape for me. She's a Ride board, which is owned by K2. Solace is written on her. I love that Sarah McLachlan album, but I know she has another name. She'll tell me in time, in the middle of some wonderful run.
I would like to make a grrl's snowboarding clothing company. Some of the boi's stuff is awesome, but everything Smitty's has for grrls is dead dull. I don't need clothes that merely keep me warm, I have those for hiking already. Why aren't there any exciting, warm hats that I can wear to proclaim throughout the winter that I am a shredding betty? Well, I know there are grrls' board companies that are internet-only, I'll have to check them.
But anyway, my hummingbird. She's gorgeous. And birds are such a perfect motif. It's funny, that a long flat board will let me fly. But it will. I can't wait to try her.
She was paid for, in cash, with some money that I got from selling my grandfather's stock. I thought it would be more than enough to eliminate all my credit card debts, but not quite. So much for the iPods and New Orleans vacations dancing through my head. I still really really want to get the new Flash and a Wacom tablet, but maybe I can wangle for early birthday presents from my folks.
In November, while some of you will be doing NANOWRIMO, I will share your pain and drive to creativity by finally re-starting and finishing the animation I intended for my nephews' 2-year-old birthday. They're now 3 and a half, this is long overdue.
I did indeed name the Changeling chronicle last night, too. My hummingbird consumed my thoughts for most of the day, but
silentstephi's reminder brought me to focus. But how could I think of things fae when I was stuck watching a very dull TV show with Dad? I pulled out his pop-up book of M.C. Escher and stared at the painting of people walking endlessly up and endlessly down some roof-stairs. And it just popped into my head: Roundabout.
We're called Roundabout, and
silentstephi is diligently at work already on our boards. I'll share where they are when they're ready for business, so to speak. Not long now. "Thayers St." Heh, Warwick grrl. :) I'm very grateful that someone wants to build the forums, I know nothing about PHP. And even though I've been hired as a programmer once, I don't have many I want to master besides Lingo and Action Scripting. They're the programming languages for Director and Flash, respectively. I like playing in pictures, y'all can keep your words for yourselves.
