generally my involvement is so on the fringes of fandom that i'm left almost completely unaware of hate and shipping wars and all that shit. i just read (and -sometimes- write) fic and leave nice comments and potter along on my tumblr, reblogging pretty pictures and gifsets... and then maybe i get curious about hate for a particular character or actor and up trawling through so much petty shit that i run scared back to my little hobbit hole and read some fluff to make myself feel better.
the only fandoms i'm really active(ha) in are bbc sherlock and merlin... (and by active i mean i read fic and reblog fanart...)
i'm so on the edge of the sherlock fandom that it feels small, and the merlin fandom really is small, so when i started dipping my toes into the spn fandom, well. it's just so big, and like the show/characters, it sometimes seems so angsty and self-loathing. and i don't get "hate" for misha or j2 or the characters they play. not liking a character for whatever reason? ok that's fine, although i try to justify it beyond keyboard smashing, at least to myself - (and the same goes for liking a character! why do i like them? what have they brought to the show?) but misha imo seems to be a pretty decent guy; he's quirky as a quirky thing, and his fans are like woah calm your tits, but ehhh, hate is a word i'd reserve for someone who stabbed your grandma or stole your childhood pet.
i guess i'm interested in why people get so invested in disliking a character or an actor. ENLIGHTEN ME.
my least favourite character in sherlock is anderson because he's fun to dislike (deliberately made so by the writers) whereas sally donovan, the woman everyone loves to hate, is a character i like because although she's resentful and petty, she sticks up for what she believes in and in her mind that means standing up against sherlock. heh, we know she's misguided but the girl has serious balls.
my least favourite character in merlin is agravaine, not counting the myriad unnecessary/badly written minor characters, because the guy was really really creepy and manipulated arthur using his mummy issues, and was just plain agravaiting (see what i did there?). that said, imo he played an important role in s4 and in arthur's character development.
which are your favourite/least favourite characters in whatever show?
of course, if misha did stab your grandma or steal mr snuffles then go right ahead, post as many nasty tweets or entries as you like the dude nicked your dog or whatever
