Last week I was able to work the ZZ Top concert. I knew who they were and I knew a handful of songs. What I didn't know is that I'd leave being highly impressed.
First off, the preshow music was all over the place. Every thing from Babyshambles, and the Beatles to Aerosmith and the Beastie Boys. Had they pulled out some U2 I may have really been enjoying the preshow.
The boys came on the stage slightly after 8 and played straight through for 90 minutes. Really, it was a short concert if I had paid big bucks to see them. But I didn't, so I didn't mind.
It took a bit before I actually knew any of the songs. "Cheap Sunglasses" was the first one I recognized. They did a decent cover of "Foxy Lady" and told a few stories of their short stay in town. The last 30 minutes was pure hits though. Every song I knew they played......."Gimmie All Your Lovin'" "Sharp Dressed Man" "Legs" "La Grange" "Tush" .....you name it, they played it. And who knew I knew so much ZZ Top by not even owning an album.
Would I pay to see them? Probably not. Would I recommend somebody else see them? Absolutely. Especially if you like pure rock and roll without the 20 minute guitar solo.
