WWI. Thomas goes to the war and Jimmy stays. For two years they keep writing to each other but the conditions at the front keep getting worse and one day the letters from Thomas stop coming. Thomas has gotten himself out of that hell and is in the hospital, but he hasn’t got the chance to tell Jimmy about it.
