My aunt and uncle are in town for the holidays. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. It's good because they take some of the heat off of me and Ma when it comes for caring for Nana. And, even though he skeeved me out a lot when I was younger, I actually get along pretty well with my uncle now. I swear, he seems a lot easier to get along with since he quit smoking.
The bad part is, my aunt and my mom don't always get along. (Understatement). And sometimes my aunt really bugs me, too. She re-arranges the house to her comfort every time they come for a visit. Lots of petty stuff comes up: like, now I have to share my bathroom with three other people instead of just one. And Ma and I get our cars kicked out of the driveway so they don't have to park their RV and their truck on the street, where they might not be safe. Yeah, there's a little favoritism. Wah!
Then there's Thanksgiving on the horizon. Last year I was bummed because I had been the turkey person for the last five years or so, and my sister (the master organizer of all family gatherings, especially Thanksgiving) delegated that task to her boyfriend, Jeff, instead. I actually cried about it! This year, I've officially washed my hands of the whole thing. I no longer feel the need to be a super-hero on Thanksgiving. Jeff is doing the turkey again, and bless him. He's doing an Alton Brown bird, which is what I had wanted to do last year. I think it will turn out just great, and he can have ALL the kudos. In fact ...
A couple years ago, I told
javamaven1 about an article I read about a group of chefs who only had about 36 hours off for Thanksgiving. They went and rented a cabin and had a low-key, friends-only holiday. It just sounded so fun and EASY. I've had that burr under my saddle ever since. I'm thinking about it again this year: escaping the whole family thing with all it's potential for drama. But, my options are few. Damn, I need a new car; it's hard to be a Turkey Day refugee without wheels.
I do have a few things to look forward to, however. Like Christmas cards. I got some really cute ones. And, I'm scheduled to see
javamaven1 and
justplainbryan again, soon. It's been wayyyyyyy too long. *happy sigh*
