Just after I moved to Portland I needlessly purchased a gorgeous red microwave solely for its pulchritude (being as I already had a functioning microwave). I wanted something pretty and shiny for my new life, and by gum I got it! But much to my dismay, the 'touchpad' began disintegrating after only ~6 mos, bubbling and bending and indenting every time I punched in a cooking time and destroyed it a little more. I fumed and brooded as it continued its downward spiral over the next 6 years. For once I went with form over function and look what it brought me: nothing but misery. My *old* microwave looked as spiffy on the day it went to Goodwill heaven as it had the day it arrived 20 years earlier. Stupid planned obsolescence!
But then today I noticed a little 'edge' to the touchpad, and suddenly realized, palm smacking forehead, that what was bubbling and bending and indenting was the peel-off plastic cover installed to protect it during shipping. I peeled it off, eh wallah! a gorgeous, shiny, brand spankin' new touchpad!
Imagine what my living room would look like if they still sold couches with plastic covers.....
