Вот что пишет Питер Хиз о том времени, когда Ауробиндо учился в Кембридже: "He also had to learn Bengali, the vernacular of the province he had been assigned to. His early efforts in the language of his parents were as clumsy as his classmates', and the teaching was not much help. The lecturer, R.M. Towers - Pundit Towers to the students - could barely speak Bengali and used outdated books as texts. Once Aurobindo and his friends brought him a work by the contemporary novelist Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. After a vain attempt to read it, the Pundit shook his head and declared, "This can't be Bengali." In Sanskrit, Aurobindo could dispense with classroom instruction. He learned the language on his own "by reading the Naladamayanti episode in the Mahabharata one of the assigned texts, "with minute care several times." This gave him a direct initiation into the literary culture of his homeland".
