Summary: A daring rescue and a candid talk. Don't eat the puppy, Above.
There was simply no gentler way to put it. I am a disaster even on a mock-battlefield.
Huo crouched low to the ground, bodily shielding the small dog that he was carrying even as another round of fire cut through the air over his head, culminating in an explosion not hardly far enough away. He glanced back over his shoulder in narrow-eyed dismay. He had hardly covered any distance at all, and the worst of the barbed wire fences were still ahead of him. Cornucopia had been right, of course, to say that they couldn't possibly get every animal that roamed the Farm's vast fields to safety, but he was not the only fool that that declaration had not stopped from trying. Just the only fool who could become hopelessly trapped in what was essentially a game of war.
He straightened slowly, hauling up his rifle with difficulty. He would have tossed it aside gladly, but its bayonet was his only help against the barbed wire. In his arms the pup wailed. He put his hand over is eyes. If only he had the harvester.
Ahead were the wires; behind were the ditches that spat gunfire and grenades, each choice worse than the last. This cannot end well...
But then he looked up, and grinned.
