On the shores of the Fisher's Isle lake, Above butchered a very large fish that she'd managed to kill. Too large to just swallow - human sized, just about - so she'd hauled it into the shallows and was now messily tearing it apart with her beak and claws. There was gore everywhere, bloodying the water; her third eyelids were closed, clouding and protecting her eyes.

She managed to separate its head from its body, took that head into her beak, and threw it back, so it slid into the back of her mouth and slowly worked its way down her throat, which bulged visibly.

The pterosaur not-sighed. First meal of the day was generally the best. < Could use butter, though, > she complained, knowing full well that she wouldn't be able to taste it anyway.

Princess froze when she saw the enormous creature. She wished she could say it was like nothing she'd ever seen, except she had no idea what kind of monsters she knew about. Regardless, this looked like one that ought to be avoided.

But now that she'd seen it, she couldn't just run away. A flying creature? It probably wouldn't have any trouble reaching other islands and swooping down on people. And by the look of the bloody mess next to it, maybe it already had....

She drew her shortsword and approached cautiously. The thing seemed pretty occupied with its meal, but Princess had a feeling that would change as soon as it spotted the shine from her sword--damn, she should've kept it in its sheath. Too late now, though.

Past the tip and first few inches of Above's beak, which had been ground to dullness thanks to her using it to grasp things and manipulate objects so often, there were a few feet of sharp-edged beak which could act as scissors. It was that she was using now, cutting an unskinned chunk into threes and tossing her head back to swallow the part that had been in the middle, fine sharp bones and all. The parts which had been on either side of her beak fell back with splashes into the water.

She shook her head briskly, sending bits of fish skin and gore in all directions, and opened her translucent third eyelids, immediately changing the world from something softly Impressionistic back into reality.

- and there was Krile, looking up at her with a sword drawn. Not comprehending, Above was blunt. < Krile, what do you think you're doing? >

"What in tarnation!" The exclamation jumped out before Princess could think things through. It was telepathic? And it knew her name! At least, she assumed so from the 'kupo' she heard in her mind. It sounded like a girl, too.

The splatter of blood and flesh had also looked curiously shiny. Taking a cautious step closer, Princess looked at what was clearly the remains of a large fish. Oh. So... this probably wasn't a monster.

Oops.

"Um, I--nothing," she said quickly, lowering the sword. She couldn't think of a polite way to say sorry, I thought you were eating someone. Everyone had told her that Edensphere was full of strangeness. Maybe this was just part of that. "Who are you? Sorry, I have amnesia."

There was just something weird about Krile this morning. Above eyed her, turning her head to look at the girl out of both eyes, until she spelled it out. She'd heard about the amnesia happening again, but...

< Oh, damn it, > she said grimly. Fish blood ran unnoticed down her beak, collecting in fat drops at the tip. < That's wonderful. >

Smaller fish in the shallows with her tried to get at parts of the carcass, stirring the water. Above moved to retrieve a piece, saying, < I'm Above. Usually you know me. This is breakfast. >

Well, that seemed to settle it. Princess couldn't imagine even a telepathic monster saying just damn it to an amnesiac waving a sword at her. Princess yanked her eyes away from the blood rolling down Above's beak as she sheathed her sword. Fish. Right. She really ought to have seen that from the start.

"I'm Princess--at least for now. I haven't been able to hear my real name." Not a monster, but really very tall... and a flier. In fact, it looked like all of Above that wasn't head was wing. Princess dipped a foot in the bloody water and shook it to warn off the minnows trying to eat the lumps of 'breakfast.' "I've been told that my memories will return in a few days, so I hope that happens soon."

...This was just depressing. Above looked away. Given... well, everything, it was a mildly telegraphed gesture. < That's how it happened last time. >

She dipped her head and tossed back another hunk of fish. It was early, and she was too hungry to stop a meal she'd started, even for a depressing conversation. Part of her wanted to scare Krile away or else pick up some of the meat and fly off with it, so she could eat in peace, but she pushed it away.

< So, you're a princess, huh? > she said, in tones that made a reasonable facsimile of being casual.

"Yeah, I think so. The vision I had before I forgot everything else had my grandpa sitting on a throne." Princess glanced at the ground and quickly put aside any thought of sitting and relaxing. She had no idea that being a princess might be considered anything but a job that she'd been told she held.

"But it seems that here, I'm a blacksmith!" She grinned, deciding to try to keep up the conversation. Above seemed uncomfortable, but... who wouldn't be, in her place? "So we're friends, huh? I hope I remember you soon."

< So he's the king. Gotcha. > This conversation was weird, Above decided.

< I know you sell stuff. I don't know if you make it, > she said speculatively. < ...Me too. >

"Yep! That's what it looked like, anyway." Princess' attitude about the whole thing was incredibly casual. She wanted to know what their country was like and especially Grandpa, but she was hoping that she'd know once her memory returned.

She stuck her hands in her pockets. "Apparently I do both... what about you? What do you do around here?" It seemed unlikely that Above would have a job in a shop, but maybe she had some kind of hobby.

< So I'd guess you're not the kind of princess who waits around in towers. > Above swallowed another chunk of fish. She could speak independently of anything going on with her mouth and throat, but some old habit made her want to pause while eating.

< I do nothing, > she said, when the lump had made its way down to her stomach. < I live. I exist. It's enough. > Usually.

"Uh, I guess not. What kind of princess waits around in towers?" Princess rubbed the back of her neck. She really didn't have any frame of reference for that, not even a general idea of pointy hats and knights in shining armor.

There was something kind of sad about what Above said. Only 'existing' sounded empty. Surely there had to be something more. "...Can you fly?"
