Hawk's reasons for agreeing to meet Daitou for a practice match were at least twofold. He'd have preferred to simply be able to be curious about Daitou's branch of swordfighting, but there were certain truths he could not ignore. Daitou's ties to Tian. The fact that his other had attacked the man. He wasn't sure if there was a connection, but considering the others--Stellaris, Paladin, the way the black dragon had leaped at Huo--there was a disturbing suggestion that his other had known whom to hurt, whom to get at to unsettle him ( ... )

Daitou's eyes flicked to Hawk as he entered the room, but he forced himself to finish the kata he was on before lowering his practice blade. It was good to practice self-control and discipline - particularly with the way he felt like his perception was heightened even just working with a practice blade.

He gave Hawk a smile, though. "No, I came a little early. Just warming up." It would be interesting to see Hawk fight - he seemed relaxed enough picking out a sword. "Do you want to use armor? I don't usually, but..." After his spar with Peacemaker, it occurred to him that he should probably offer, at least, if it made the other man more comfortable.

Hawk tugged free one of the mock swords made of split bamboo; at least they were straight, and balanced somewhat right. He wouldn't have been surprised to learn the one-edged blade he'd seen Daitou with was a later invention that he would have remembered, simply by virtue of how often the principle held true.

"Armour?" He couldn't help the amusement seeping into his voice. "Probably not. Not sure I'd even know how to move in it if it was any heavier. Or should I worry that you even asked that question?"

"Hmm - probably not," Daitou replied with an impish grin. "Like I said, I don't usually use it. But there is practice armour stored here, and some people prefer to use it." As he spoke, he walked over to a weapons rack to replace the bokuto he'd been doing kata with, and selecting one of the lighter bamboo shinai instead. He preferred using the solid wood blade, but.. this was safer.

"We can't do too much damage to each other with these, even if we try."

Hawk paused to consider Daitou. He handled the wooden sword with every evidence of being as adept with a real one. He might have been even smaller in frame than Hawk himself, and while that affected reach and strength, he knew better than to count it as an advantage to himself without actually having seen Daitou fight ( ... )
