Aim had spent a good five out of his ten minutes before he was supposed to meet this Gene person in the less than welcoming public bathroom, staring at a mirror. His excuse was that he wouldn't trust himself to recognize even someone who looked exactly like him, but really there was obviously no issue with not being recognized first. The real reason behind it was a continuing attempt to get a grasp on the situation and more importantly, himself. Unfortunately the attempt continued to be fruitless, leaving him feeling relatively unchanged in his disconcertion ( ... )

When it took Aim an extra few minutes to get to the canteen, Gene had assumed that he'd simply gotten lost. It was easy to do when you were new. He glanced over at the beverage area and contemplated grabbing one of the cups of coffee there when he saw the door swing open in his peripheral vision.

...And there was Aim. As ordinary as the idea of having an identical look alike had become, Gene wondered when the reality would feel normal. It was still just a touch surreal. He took a deep breath of his own that sounded more like a sigh, then nodded in acknowledgment to Aim.

"Hey yourself."

Gene indicated a nearby seat with a broad gesture that trailed smoke in its wake. If he'd had anything prepared to say, it'd flown out of his head. Oh well, he could wing it.

"So... where do you want to start?"

He nodded in thanks at the offered seat before making himself comfortable. Well, comfortable was relative. The only thing in his memory that was anywhere close to comfortable was a few short moments in his dream, but that probably shouldn't be counted anyway. In a way, he had never been comfortable.

He tried to steal a more direct glance at Gene, without being rude. They really did look exactly alike, and it was yet another one to add to the heaping pile of unsettling things. Still, hiding how he felt came like second nature as he settled a bit more into his seat with an ironic smile.

"You act as if I have a point of reference." He shrugged. "I haven't got a clue where to start."

Gene supposed Aim had a fair point there. He stuck his cigarette in his mouth and took a long moment to inhale before deciding to drop the first bomb.

"How's this for a point of reference?" Gene exhaled, then pointed his cancer stick at Aim to emphasize his statement. "You've been here before. Twice, in fact. You didn't hang around long after I first got here, so I couldn't tell you much about what you did." He tapped off his ash in the plastic ash tray provided on the table beside him before continuing. "But I'm sure there are a few about who could tell you if you're that curious about it."

He furrowed his brow in renewed confusion. "Twice?" He repeated, not necessarily as a request for verification. "No one else has said anything about that." He stared at the surface of the table for a moment, not doing as good a job of hiding his discomfort. "Are you sure?"

He looked up again. "Well yeah I'm curious about it. There's people here that know me." He wanted to finish 'I don't even know myself,' but that was a given by now. The questions started coming to mind now, but he fought back the urge to blurt them out at Gene...who seemed to suggest with his words and body language that he didn't have much of a desire to help, even if he had had the ability.
