Summary: Night goes to meet with Chafe but isn't sure if he'll actually find him.

Finally having gotten a job with one of the scavenger groups, Night spent a lot of time going up and down The Stairway to the Stars. He tried countless times to get out at The City Without Shape, but even when the elevator stopped on what seemed to be that specific level, it wouldn't open--no, the doors wouldn't even budge. Every once in a while, Night would stop there to try again, but his efforts were useless.
Either way, he was curious about this... Chafe person who had corresponded with him by using the journal. The old man Fugue had told him the truth; anything that one wrote, it seemed that anyone else with a similar journal could read. Night would have loved to test this out if only he could find different kinds of paper to experiment with, but in the meanwhile, he'd simply have to believe in what he'd seen.
So he'd gone to The City Without Walls, because it seemed that Chafe wanted to meet him there. Exiting The Stairway to the Stars, Night found himself amidst the tangle of roots at the base of level. He looked up at the various roots and bridges--roadways that enabled passage from one island to another. It never ceased to amaze him; looking outward revealed floating islands in what seemed like an endless blue sky. And when he looked above and beyond the trunk of the tree, he could see the canopy of green, Square Zero. The place where everything began.
Not wishing to waste any time, Night climbed up one of the roots and made his way to the island with medical clinics and emergency rooms. As he didn't want to get in the way, he hurriedly took one of the bridges over to the island where all the trades-people's workshops were located. It was there that he waited, hoping that somehow Chafe would stand out and look as weird as he wrote.
