"You're just gonna tire yourself out," Bucky said, right back when they started work, but Steve's always has been as obstinate as a mule -- though Bucky's not sure if he's ever seen a mule to judge their obstinacy, and it's actually quite possibly that Steve has them beat. He won't lie down when he's sick, he won't take money to get his meds on time, and he won't stop trying to do the same kind of work as Bucky, up on some scaffolding on what is already an obscenely hot day. It's not even going to pay that well, at least not for Steve, because the guy they're working for pays by the amount of work done and not by the hour, and Steve's had to stop three times already to grab his inhaler.

It's a smoggy sort of day, too, the air heavy and thick, and Bucky's got sweat running down his body, pooling there in the small of his back. He pulls his shirt off -- hey, he's got nothing to be ashamed of, after all, he's got a fine body -- and grins when Steve's eyes catch on him, on a line of sweat on his collarbone, on the line of his hip disappearing into his pants.

Not that this is going to be doing Steve's asthma any good, with the way he catches his breath, but Bucky can't resist. He's always liked to be the centre of attention, and it's best when it's Steve, those big, serious blue eyes. He can go out with all the dames in Brooklyn, but he goes home to Steve, drawn and helpless and maybe even whipped, not that he's gonna admit it.

"You're teasing me again," Steve says, softly. He moves closer to Bucky on the scaffolding. "It's almost like you want me to end up kissing you, here where everyone can see."

And Bucky can't deny it, because it is almost like that. He can't believe anyone who doesn't look at Steve and see past the dark, bruised look around his eyes from long nights of illness, see past the skinny body and the look of being perpetually hungry, and the sunburn starting to show already on his pale skin, flushing the skin across his cheekbones and the bridge of his nose. He doesn't get how people don't see Steve, the determined fire at the heart of him, something that could light up the whole world, if only given the chance. He can't believe that it isn't really okay for him to just reach over, tug Steve close, and kiss him right there, kiss that sunburned cheek and those serious lips that only ever smile, really, for him.

"Almost," Bucky says, just that. "Don't want you getting into more fights."

"So stop looking like that," Steve says, and his lips twist into that smile, lopsided and loving, the smile that says Bucky louder than words, and Bucky's heart is full, full to bursting.

"You stop looking like that. And at least go get a drink or something, you look like you're dying up here." He swats at Steve, giddy with the heat and with this secret thing they have between them, and he's rewarded with another smile.
