"You'll get sunburnt," River says, running her hands over his bare shoulders. Simon's skin is sun-warm, damp with sweat, and his hair curls a little with it. He's brighter than the sun, though, smiling at her without restraint, so she doesn't make him move. He seems to be soaking up the sun, soaking up the time with her in the long grass, and with their lives the way they are this happens rarely enough, so she doesn't say anything more. He kisses her softly -- barely brushes his lips over hers.
"I'll risk it," he says, belatedly. His fingers move over her cheek in a soft caress, move lower, tracing the line of her chin and then moving down over her neck, her shoulder. She makes a pleased little noise, stretching under him. "You've got grass in your hair."
"And grass stains on my back. It's worth it, Simon." She closes her eyes, kisses him again. "I'm River today."
He rests their foreheads together. "You're always River."
"I'm more River now than I am sometimes."
"You're always River. Even when you're hanging upside down from the railings reciting the periodic table backwards and scaring me to death."
She laughs, and he smiles; his eyes crinkling, his forehead smoothed out, no lines of worry. She wraps herself around him, rolls them over, pinning him down into the grass. "Your turn to get grass strains."
