Summary: Simon and Mal met in a bar on Osiris, before River even went to the Academy. For comment_fic.

He didn't think he could ever forget that face. He hadn't expected to find someone like that in a cheap bar on Osiris -- at least, not one that would stoop to talk to a man like him, much less take him home. He hadn't been in the mood for talk, though, and apparently neither was the boy. He was a boy, for all that he might have been twenty or more. They could've been the same age and Mal would've felt older than him. Core-bred and pretty, thinkin' he was mature but not knowing about what life is really like, not knowing about lives that aren't the fortunate few. Sure he probably saw some beaten women, some drug-ruined and bankrupt kids who'd had money and no sense, stuff like that, but he didn't know about lives that were nothing but a hard grind, lives like Mal's.

It was probably a good thing the kid hadn't wanted to talk. His little stint of slumming had paid off, and Mal had gone home with him, fallen into bed with him like it was something he did every day.

Mal might've forgotten his name, but he didn't forget his face, his hands, that body under his. It was almost like no one had ever touched the kid like that before, like it was his first time, and Mal wasn't exactly averse to drawing it out and letting him lose himself in bliss. He looked gorramn pretty when he did, after all. And it wasn't like he didn't reciprocate -- those hands, ta ma de, his hands. He knew exactly where to touch, exactly how to touch, surgically precise.

He thought about that face, those hands, that body, sometimes. Just sometimes, when he was lonely and there was nothing better going. He couldn't remember the name -- Sam? Simon? Stephen? -- but he thought about the kid's face. He'd have known it anywhere.

It took him a moment, when Simon walked onto Serenity -- only that, and only because it was the most unexpected place he could have thought to see the kid. Simon looked at him, through those dark glasses, and it was like a punch in the gut and Mal suddenly, desperately needed a drink.
