Fandom: The Dark Is Rising
Pairing: Owen/Guinevere
Warnings: Angst
Rating: G
Summary: Owen finally decides to take care of himself and Bran. For over_look.

"I think you should hold him," Blodwen Rowlands had said, putting the baby into his arms, her voice almost sing-song, gentle. She had put her hand on his shoulder, then, and smiled with all the sympathy in her sweet soul. "I know it is hard -- but Gwen isn't coming back. She's gone and you can't keep looking for her. There's this child to take care of and all."

And then she had gone, shutting the door behind her as if to forbid him to leave, as if to shut out the night with the phantoms that came to torment him.

Owen has no idea what to do with a being as tiny as this. He remembers the way his Gwen -- not his really, no, he knows that but he can't help but say it still -- held the babe close, the way there was something in her eyes that was frightened and trapped, like a cornered animal. The baby's -- Bran's -- eyes are so different to hers, and yet there's something in them, something wary and world-weary even now, that is the same.

"I will protect you," he says to the child, and he finds it's easier to hold him so, and that the baby calms a little and cuddles against him now. "It's okay, bach."

He stands up then, being careful not to move the child too quickly. There are so many things to attend to -- the lad must be Christened, of course, and there must be a proper adoption. Bran can't go to anyone but him -- Guinevere wanted him to care for the child, and that's enough for him, even though it would be easier to let the child go, to not be thinking of her. Until now, Jen Evans and Blodwen Rowlands took care of him, but now -- now he's determined.

"I will be the only father you ever know, Bran-bach," Owen says, softly, holding the baby closer. "I will be a good one. I will raise you right."
