It's so fucked up.
In many ways, my favorite website in the world is jwpepper.com because I can listen to real pieces of music before I order them. In many other ways it is also my least favorite because they tease me with a large collection of pieces, but when I narrow it down to church music, then choral music, then youth choir music, then Lent music, then unison parts, they have maybe five pieces, which aren't actually for Lent, nor are they. It's frustrating. It is the hardest time of year to be a church choir director. I can no longer do Christmas tunes, and in a few weeks all my tunes will have to be for Lent, the most dreary season of all. I feel like I have limited discretion when it comes to picking a piece for church. I feel like have to fit the reverence of the particular Sunday. It's a tough decision to make.
Speaking of decisions, did you see Ashlee Simpson at the Orange Bowl last night? Who makes those decisions to program someone like that? Who would honestly think that she would be appealing, especially after Saturday Night Live. She blamed her band?!?!?!?!?!?!?! But here's what I don't get. Now after so many pop stars have bitten the dust and been exposed for the limited talent they have, why are so many pop stars still so, well, popular?
You know who's a popular person these days? Sue. Sue who? You know who. Sue Nami!... Seriously though, I feel like tsunami is the word of the week, and sadly it's nothing more than a word. It is getting tons of treatment by the media, and that's good. Beyond the fact that it's a massive tragedy of biblical proportions, just the fact that this is taking place on the very same earth where I can enjoy massive abundance and convenience, an ounce of which is beyond the imaginations of thousand Indonesians... it's just so fucked up. Look at the dialog I had with someone on my buddy list.
Ed EdEdEdEdEdEd: what can I do about tsunami relief
SmarterChild: You tell me what!
Ed EdEdEdEdEdEd: I want to help the people of South Asia
SmarterChild: You want to help the people of south asia! lol!
Ed EdEdEdEdEdEd: don't laugh about that
SmarterChild: Oh no?
Ed EdEdEdEdEdEd: it's serious
SmarterChild: Huh, whatever.

What a selfish capitalist! Good thing he won't tell me his name.
But yes, we are stingy. As Nicholas Kristof said in today's NY Times, "When grieving victims intrude onto our TV screens, we dig into our pockets and provide the massive, heartwarming response that we're now displaying in Asia; the rest of the time, we're tightwads who turn away as people die in far greater numbers." Every month, more people will die of malaria than died in the tsunamis. Last year we gave 15 cents for every $100 of national income to poor countries. We spend more on soda pop each day.
It's so fucked up.
