Work life Balance

Dec 21, 2010 01:30

My eyes glaze over at the concept.

I remember asking a manager for a Sunday off to see my grandmother who was terminally ill at the hospital with 8 weeks left to live. I was supposed to go with my parents to visit her that weekend.

The manager said I wasn't taking Sunday off and I was going to the office to finish his project.

To this day, that fateful Sunday still haunts me because as much as I tried to fight back, the look and tone was pretty much saying the work was non-negotiable.

As I give up my evenings and dinners with friends or family. When managers say 'No, you aren't going out tonight, you are staying here to finish your work', I'm left to wonder if this is all really worth it. I try to fight back, but it seems to be a losing battle.

As my friend, upset by my cancellation tonight, eloquently said tonight, "You are just screwing yourself over".

I need help because this isn't working out right now.

If the above are any indication, I think there is something fundamentally wrong with the people I work for.
